It was a banner year for Peterson, who was named to his first All-Star team in 2025. Peterson seemed to hit a wall late in the season on the mound, but his fielding prowess, and particularly his consistent excellence in controlling the running game, has led to him being named a finalist for the pitching gold glove. The other two finalists are Matthew Boyd of the Cubs and Logan Webb of the Giants.
And speaking of the running game, a big part of the Mets’ success controlling the opposition’s stolen base threat was Torrens. The Mets’ backup catcher led the team in Defensive Runs Saved with 11, despite playing only 88 games. Torrens finished 94th percentile in Fielding Run Value and 82nd percentile in framing. His 1.87-second Pop Time was better than 97 percent of catchers, and his Caught Stealing Above Average was in the 100th percentile.
To be eligible to win a Gold Glove as a catcher, a player must have played in at least half of his team’s games by game 138. With Francisco Alvarez hurt to start the season, Torrens was able to get to that mark. Patrick Bailey of the Giants, last year’s recipient, and Carson Kelly of the Cubs are Torrens’s competition.
Peterson would be just the second Mets pitcher to win a Gold Glove (Ron Darling in 1989), and Torrens would become the first Mets catcher to win the award.
The voting is done by managers and coaches, who account for 75 percent of the selection process. The other 25 percent comes from the SABR Defensive Index (SDI), which measures “the number of runs saved by a player’s defensive performance over the course of a season, compared to the average defensive player at that position.”
Other finalists for the NL are Bryce Harper, Matt Olson and Spencer Steer at first base, Xavier Edwards, Brice Turang and Nico Hoerner at second base, Matt Shaw, Ryan McMahon and Ke’Bryan Hayes at third base and Masyn Winn, Nick Allen and Mookie Betts at shortstop. Francisco Lindor was not named a finalist for the second straight season.
As for the outfielders, Ian Happ, Tommy Pham and Kyle Stowers are the finalists for left field, Jacob Young, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Victor Scott II received the nods in center and Corbin Carroll, Sal Frelick and Fernando Tatis Jr. are the finalists in right field. Javier Sanoja, Miguel Rojas and Jared Triolo were named the finalists for the Utility Gold Glove award in the NL.
Former Mets Luis Severino, Jacob deGrom and Andrés Giménez were named finalists in the AL. The rest of the finalists can be found here.
The last Met to take home the hardware was Juan Lagares all the way back in 2014, making the current drought the longest in team history without a Gold Glove winner. Winners for this season will be announced on November 2.
