2025 REVIEW
In a stunningly disappointing 2025 Mets season, Mark Vientos was one of the biggest letdowns of them all.
Last year, Metsmerized awarded Vientos an A on his 2024 report card following what seemed ot be a breakout campaign. However, he suffered a major regression in 2025, offensively and defensively.
Vientos struggled to find any consistency at the plate in 2025. He opened the season with solid run production, belting four homers and 15 RBIs through April despite a .212/.297/.394 line. Vientos then picked up his average but lost his power, totaling just six homers through July, with a long IL stint in June for a strained hamstring partly to blame. He rediscovered his stroke in August, blasting eight home runs with 22 RBIs while hitting .278/.330/.658. But the bat went quiet again in September during the thick of the Wild Card Race, when Vientos hit just .184/.262/.303 with two homers and eight RBIs.
Altogether, it was a far cry from Vientos’ 2024 season, in which he hit 27 home runs with 71 RBIs and slashed .266/.322/.516 in 413 at-bats – good for a 3.1 bWAR, second-best on the team behind Francisco Lindor. Vientos stepped into his own even more in the playoffs, when he had five homers and a Mets record 14 RBIs in 13 games to help New York reach the NLCS.
Many analysts predicted some regression from Vientos in 2025, largely based on a nearly 30% K rate and .324 BABIP in 2024. Still, the lack of power for most of the season was surprising. Per Baseball Savant, his batting run value went from 20 in 2024 (88th percentile) to a whopping negative six in 2025 (25th percentile). His barrel rate percentage also declined, dropping from 14.1% in 2024 (92nd percentile) to 11.5% (72nd percentile).
Of concern, Vientos struggled against the fastball in 2025, a pitch he absolutely crushed in 2024. Swaggy V’s batting average was .326 against the fastball in 2024, with a .615 SLG. In 2025, Vientos only hit .236 against the pitch with a .441 SLG.
Defensively, Vientos was even more disappointing. After showing the potential to be an adequate third baseman in 2024, Vientos became a liability at the position in 2025. His Fielding Runs Value was negative six, the same as last season, but he committed eight errors compared to just five last year when he played 324 more innings. Vientos played just 72 games at third, as he lost the job to Brett Baty and essentially became a full-time DH.
2026 OVERVIEW
This offseason is shaping up to be déjà vu for both Vientos and the Mets. With Pete Alonso again becoming a free agent, Vientos’ name might float as Alonso’s successor at first base, despite playing just 17 games at the position. If Alonso returns to Queens, Vientos would likely retreat to a full-time DH, especially with the departure of Starling Marte.
However, David Stearns may trade Vientos, especially considering his name was a hot commodity at the July trade deadline. While his value may be at an all-time low, he has enough of a resume to prove he’s capable of being an everyday major league player. Now might be the time the Mets decide to be aggressive and trade a player like Vientos to upgrade at another position.
That would be a risky decision, as Vientos is just one year removed from a stellar season. And despite his struggles this year, Vientos was still in the 89th percentile for hard-hit rate and 82nd percentile for average exit velocity in 2025. Even if he’s no longer the Mets’ third baseman of the future, there is still hope that Vientos can return to form as an impact bat in the middle of the Mets order.
Consistent playing time, of course, has been an issue for Mark. With the departures of Marte and Jesse Winker, the DH spot is clear, especially if the team re-signs Alonso to play first.
