SSC’s Coach José “Tony” González Honored with Statewide Sportsmanship Award
SOUTH HOLLAND, IL — South Suburban College proudly announces that longtime Head Soccer Coach José “Tony” González has been recognized with the Outstanding Achievement in Sportsmanship Award during Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs’ Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration on September 25, 2025.
The annual event commemorates Hispanic Heritage Month by honoring community leaders from across Illinois who have made lasting contributions in their fields. Coach González was celebrated for his decades of dedication, leadership, and positive impact on student-athletes both on and off the field.
González has served as Head Men’s Soccer Coach at SSC since 2000 and as Head Women’s Soccer Coach since 2017. Under his leadership, the SSC Men’s Soccer team has achieved a 292-157-38 record, while the Women’s Soccer team has posted an impressive 86-38-6 record.
“Coach González embodies the values of sportsmanship, perseverance, and community pride,” said Vice President Devon Powell of Student & Enrollment Services. “His recognition at the state level shines a spotlight on the incredible work he has done at SSC for over two decades.”
In addition to his outstanding coaching record, González brings extensive experience as both a player and coach, continuing to inspire generations of student-athletes.
