Cup of Coffee: Romero doubles twice, Drohan strikes out six in WooSox win

After Portland's season concluded on Sunday, the WooSox are the now the only active Red Sox affiliate. Worcester survived a ninth-inning scare to win the opening game of their final series of the season.

The WooSox jumped out to an early lead as Abraham Toro launched a three-run homer in the first inning. Worcester grabbed another run in the second as Mikey Romero (pictured) drove in Tyler McDonough with a double. Romero added a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning and was 2 for 3 overall in the game. Nathan Hickey put together a strong game for the WooSox, going 2 for 4 and ripping an RBI double in the eighth inning. 

Shane Drohan started on the mound and delivered a solid outing for Worcester, continuing a strong run since returning from a forearm injury. He allowed two runs on five hits five innings, striking out six batters and walking one. Through 44 innings in Triple-A this season, Drohan has pitched to a 2.25 ERA with 60 strikeouts and 14 walks. The trio of Bryan Mata, Alex Hoppe, and Hobie Harris followed Drohan with a scoreless inning apiece. Isaiah Campbell made the game interesting in the ninth, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk, but the WooSox were able to escape the jam and emerge with the win.

Player of the Day: Fresh off being named the SoxProspects.com Player of the Week, Mikey Romero continued his hot streak on Tuesday night. He was 2 for 3 with two doubles, two RBI, and a run scored out of the leadoff spot in the lineup. In 40 games since being promoted to Portland, Romero is now batting .226/.278/.484 and he has nine home runs.
