Phillies Injury Updates
- RHP Zack Wheeler (thoracic outlet sydrome)
- Status: Out for season
- Zack Wheeler, who suffered a blood clot earlier this season, will undergo a procedure to correct the medical issue that caused. Phillies manager Rob Thomson announced that the ace pitcher will have thoracic outlet decompression surgery on Sept. 23 in St. Louis. The recovery is considered to take about six to eight months, leaving the Phillies without their top arm for the rest of 2025.
- SS Trea Turner (strained right hamstring)
- Status: 10-day injured list
- Trea Turner, perhaps Philadelphia’s best all-around player this season, suffered a Grade 1 hamstring strain last weekend in Miami. He was placed on the IL on Monday, but is expected to return by the time the postseason starts, if not a bit sooner.
- Thomson said Saturday that Turner played catch, did some work with his glove and ran in the pool. He could begin swinging a bat again on Sunday or Monday. “So that’s a good sign,” Thomson said. Turner will not travel to Los Angeles with the Phillies for next week’s road trip.
- 3B Alec Bohm (left shoulder inflammation)
- Status: 10-day injured list
- Alec Bohm was placed on the IL on Monday, leaving the Phillies without both starters on the left side of the infield at the same time.
- Bohm will travel to the West Coast with the Phillies, and the team will “hopefully” be able to activate him for their series in Arizona starting Friday, Thomson said.
- INF Edmundo Sosa (groin tightness)
- Status: Day-to-day
- Edmundo Sosa was removed from Friday night’s win early with tightness in his right groin, Thomson said. The manager noticed that Sosa was not moving at 100% on a ball up the middle.
- Thomson said Saturday that Sosa has been playing through a groin issue. He saw a doctor on Saturday. Thomson wasn’t sure whether or not Sosa would need a stint on the IL, but the infielder will get “a couple of days” off regardless. With Turner and Sosa unavailable, second baseman Bryson Stott will slide over to short on Saturday night.
- RHP Jordan Romano (neck stiffness, finger numbness)
- Status: 15-day injured list
- The struggling Jordan Romano was placed on the IL on Aug. 26 with inflammation in his right middle finger.
- Romano was supposed to face hitters in a live batting practice on Saturday, but the reliever reported stiffness in his neck and numbness in that same finger on Friday, according to Thomson. The Phillies believe it could be “some type of nerve thing.” The team will not seek out further testing for Romano and will wait to see if the symptoms subside so he can continue his rehab.
- LHP José Alvarado (strained left forearm)
- Status: Out for season
- Reliever José Alvarado was placed on the 15-day injured list on Friday with a strained left forearm. Ineligible to pitch in the postseason due to his suspension for a performance-enhancing drug earlier this year, he will not return this season, Thomson said.
- RHP Daniel Robert (strained right forearm)
- Status: Out for season
- Reliever Daniel Robert was placed on the IL on Sept. 3 with a forearm strain. He was transferred to the 60-day IL on Sept. 8.
