Morning Briefing: Jonah Tong Set to Face Jacob deGrom

Good morning, Mets fans!

The Mets came out swinging Thursday night in Philadelphia, plating four runs in the first inning. But what began as a promising start quickly unraveled, as their offense went silent and their last 25 hitters were retired in order. The Phillies chipped away at the early deficit and ultimately completed the four-game sweep with a 6-4 win.

The loss extended New York’s skid to six games, dropped them 11 back in the NL East and left them clinging to a 1.5-game lead for the final Wild Card spot.

The Mets now host the Texas Rangers for a three-game set. Old friend Jacob deGrom (11-7, 2.78 ERA) takes the mound tonight against Jonah Tong (1-1, 4.09 ERA). The former Mets ace duels the up-and-comer. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET.
