Morning Briefing: Mets Fighting Four-Game Skid
Good morning, Mets fans!
The Mets fell 9-3 to the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday for their fourth consecutive loss.
Ranger Suárez dominated on the mound, shutting down New York for six scoreless innings and striking out 12. Offensively, the Mets managed eight hits but failed to capitalize with runners on. Mark Vientos hit a solo homer in the seventh, and RBIs from Starling Marte and Jeff McNeil accounted for their other two runs. Southpaw Sean Manaea took the loss, giving up four runs over five innings, and the bullpen couldn’t hold back Philadelphia’s late pile on, including a Kyle Schwarber three-run homer. The Mets have now dropped four consecutive games.

Today, the Mets aim to avoid a sweep at Citizens Bank Park as Clay Holmes (11-7, 3.61 ERA) faces Cristopher Sánchez (12-5, 2.60 ERA). The game will be broadcast locally on SNY. First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. ET.
NL Standings Update
The Mets’ loss to Philadelphia all but ends their bid for the NL East. The Phillies now hold a nine-game lead in the division with 17 to play.
The Mets are also now just two games ahead of the Giants for the third Wild Card spot. San Francisco won its 13th in its last 16, 5-3 over the Diamondbacks, Tuesday night. Notably, the Mets hold the tiebreaker, should it come to that.
The Reds are still hanging on, too, after beating the Padres 4-2. They’re a game back of the Giants and three games behind the Mets.
