After Review….

The Baltimore Orioles beat the Pittsburgh Pirates (64-81) 3-2 in 11 innings before an announced crowd of 15,488 on Tuesday night in Baltimore. With the bases loaded and no outs, the Orioles and the fans had to wait for New York to confirm the walk-off hit and run.

Anticipation…is keeping me waiting

The 11th inning began with Gunnar Henderson on second base as the ghost runner. Ryan Mountcastle put runners at the corner with a single before Colton Cowser was intentionally walked to laod the bases. On a 1-2 count Samuel Basallo flicked a 4-seam fastball 212 ft. down the left field line. Pittsburgh’s Tommy Pham made a diving attempt on the ball and after the ball glanced off the top of his glove and hit the ground it was ruled foul. A Crew Chief Challenge ensued and the video showed the ball hitting the foul line and ultimately the call was overturned. It was the second walk-off hit of Basallo’s young career.

The Pirates jumped out to a 1 run lead in the first inning and the Orioles matched that run with a Mountcastle RBI sac fly in the bottom of the inning. Jeremiah Jackson‘s fifth homer of the season, leading off the sixth, gave the Birds a 2-1 lead.

That lead looked secure as starter Kyle Bradish was cruising through 7.0 innings having allowed just the oen run on 4 hits with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts and doing so in 81 pitches (56 K’s). Rico Garcia struck out one Pittsburgh batter in the eighth and all looked good until Yennier Cano gave up a lead-off homerun to Pham in the ninth.

Dietrich Enns (3-2) was the pitcher of record once the review was completed. He walked 1 and struck out 2 over the final two innings.

Jackson Holliday and Jackson each had a pair of hits on the night; Jackson left the game after being hit on the right elbow by a Braxton Ashcraft pitch in the eighth inning.
