Jose Siri Returns to Active Roster
Updated Post, 9/9/25
Nearly five months after fracturing his leg, Jose Siri has returned to the Mets’ active roster. He is starting in center field Tuesday night and batting ninth.
With Cedric Mullins struggling, Siri will likely return to more of an everyday role—especially as the Mets are set to face three lefties in the next three days. Before injuring his leg, Siri had a hit and four walks in 24 plate appearances to start the year. He did, however, have two stolen bases and scored five runs through pinch running appearances.

Francisco Alvarez is in the lineup for Triple-A Syracuse tonight, to begin what is probably the most must-watch rehab process for the Mets in 2025.
Alvarez sprained the UCL in his right thumb during a head-first slide into second base against the Mariners ten days ago. The injury will require surgery, but to prolong his season, Alvarez will do his best to play through it for the time being.
Alvarez took batting practice earlier this week and told reporters that he feels no pain in the thumb. Since it is the thumb on his throwing hand, the team believes that the difficulty will be more about the offensive side of his game.
Siri, Winker Start for Single-A St. Lucie
Jose Siri and Jesse Winker took the field on Wednesday afternoon, taking a big step in their arduous process back to a major league diamond. The two started for Low-A St. Lucie, and with 30 days being the maximum time allotted for major leaguers on rehab, they did so with an October hope in mind.
Siri started in center field, and Winker was the designated hitter. The two hit one and two in the lineup. Siri played five innings and had two plate appearances, resulting in a walk and a hit-by-pitch. He also made one catch in the field. Winker had two plate appearances as well, striking out in the first inning and grounding into a double play to end the third.
Siri fractured his left tibia during an April 12th game against the Athletics, after fouling a ball off his leg. The Mets believed that he might return sooner than initially expected, but as the healing didn’t progress at the pace that they wanted, they held him back until now. He is finally back on a field over four months later.
Winker’s season has been even more stop-and-start. Winker came out of a game against the Cardinals on May 4, his first start of the season in the field, after an oblique injury. After playing in five rehab games, he returned to the major league club on July 8, played two games, and then was placed back on the Injured List due to a back injury.
With the trade deadline acquisition of Cedric Mullins and the amount of major-league caliber position players the team can consider for spots, it’s a question of how Siri and Winker would fit on an October or even September roster.
If Mullins starts, Tyrone Taylor has Siri’s spot of backup, glove-first outfielder with speed. If Mullins is on the bench, he could serve as the left-handed pinch-hitter that Winker would be vying for. And with Starling Marte and Mark Vientos hitting the way they are, the starting DH seems to be out of the question for Winker. Ronny Mauricio is likely the odd man out as soon as at least one of Siri or Winker is ready to be activated.
So it remains to be seen what the roles will be for Siri and Winker once they are activated. But as the old adage goes, these are only good problems to have.
