This is reportedly an about-face for Mets brass, who have shifted in their mentality in recent days, according to Puma. Tong made his first start for Triple-A Syracuse a week ago, throwing 5.2 scoreless innings with nine strikeouts, giving up just three hits. He is making his second start for Syracuse tonight. The 22-year-old dominated Double-A earlier on this season, pitching to an 8-5 record, on a 1.59 ERA in 20 starts.
This comes on the heels of the season-ending UCL injury for Frankie Montas, but perhaps more importantly, the two successful first starts for Nolan McLean.
There was a chance that Brandon Sproat would also make his MLB debut in the coming days, with the team in the midst of playing games on 16 straight days. But instea,d Kodai Senga will make his first start of the season on four days’ rest on Monday, keeping the current five-man rotation intact.
Tong pitched tonight against the Indianapolis Indians (Pirates) and was stellar. The righty pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just five hits while striking out eight. His season ERA between Double-A and Triple-A is 1.50.
