Mets Were In On Miller, Buxton at Trade Deadline

0 3

The Mets made their fair share of moves at the trade deadline, acquiring multiple relievers, as well as Cedric Mullins to play center field. Everyone they acquired is a rental player, but as it turns out, David Stearns was looking at some longer-term moves.

According to Dan Hayes of The Athetic, the Braves and the Mets were the two teams that showed the most interest in acquiring Byron Buxton. Unfortunately for New York, Buxton has a no-trade clause, and it appears as if Buxton was hell-bent on using it no matter what to stay in Minnesota.

Instead of moving perhaps their most valuable commodity, the Twins instead traded 11 players, including Carlos Correa, Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax.

One player that did get traded that the Mets were reportely in on was Mason Miller. The now-Padre flamethrower was traded to San Diego from the Athletics, who initially believed that the Mets were the most serious for his services, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. New York’s team’s pursuit of Miller was “very serious,” representing the talks with the A’s as “substantial.”

Instead, not willing to meet the price, the Mets pivoted to Tyler Rogers and Ryan Helsley. So far, neither of the two have given up an earned run.

But with the possible opt-out of Edwin Díaz this offseason, it remains to be seen how the back of the bullpen looks not just through October, but into 2026 and beyond.
