Recapping a whirlwind of a deadline day.
The trade deadline has come and gone, and it was one of the wilder ones in recent memory. The Padres dealt seven of their top 17 prospects; the Yankees and Tigers rebuilt their entire bullpens; the Twins, Diamondbacks, and Orioles completely tore down; and the Rangers and Astros unfortunately got better. Let’s get to all of that and more.
In Mariners news...
- Jerry Dipoto spoke to the media about a busy deadline for the Mariners.
Around the league...
- The most impactful and surprising move of the deadline saw young closer Mason Miller and left-hander J.P. Sears dealt from the A’s to the Padres in exchange for a prospect package highlighted by top-5 MLB prospect Leo De Vries.
- In another shocker, Carlos Correa is returning to the Astros after Houston worked out a deal with the Twins.
- The Astros further added to their infield depth by acquiring infielder Ramón Urías from the Orioles.
- The Rangers strengthened their rotation depth by acquiring right-hander Merrill Kelly from the D-Backs. They also got righty Phil Maton from the Cardinals.
- The Angels, who for some reason decided to buy at the deadline, acquired infielder Oswald Peraza from the Yankees.
- The Yankees made three separate deals for relievers, netting David Bednar from the Pirates, Camilo Doval from the Giants, and Jake Bird from the Rockies.
- Not to be outdone, the Tigers added a full quartet of relievers: Paul Sewald from Cleveland, Rafael Montero from Atlanta, Kyle Finnegan from Washington, and Codi Heuer from Texas. They also traded for righty Charlie Morton, who will join their starting rotation.
- The Twins sent stud setup man Griffin Jax to the Rays for former top prospect Taj Bradley.

- The Phillies found their outfield addition in the form of Harrison Bader, who was also acquired from the Twins.
- The Royals sent backstop Freddy Fermin to the Padres for a pair of prospects. They then added lefty Bailey Falter in a trade with Pittsburgh and outfielder Mike Yazstrzemski in a move with San Francisco.
- San Diego added left-hander Nestor Cortés in a swap with the Brewers.
- The Orioles successfully re-homed outfielder Cedric Mullins in a deal with the Mets.
- The Dodgers had a fairly quiet deadline, trading for righty Brock Stewart from Minnesota and outfielder Alex Call from Washington.
- Former Mariner José Caballero will spend the rest of the year in pinstripes after being acquired by the Yankees.
- The Red Sox were fairly quiet yesterday, though they did get righty Dustin May from the Dodgers for a pair of minor league outfielders.
- The Reds made a pair of deals, acquiring right-hander Zack Littell from the Rays and infielder Miguel Andújar from the A’s.
- The Rays added righty Adrian Houser in a deal with the White Sox, sending former top prospect Curtis Mead to Chicago alongside a pair of pitching prospects.
- To cap off a wild day for the Twins, they sent righty Louis Varland and first baseman Ty France to the Blue Jays.
- The Brewers acquired a pair of injured pitchers from the Diamondbacks, getting left-hander Jordan Montgomery and right-hander Shelby Miller.
- A number of top trade chips ended up not getting moved, including Sandy Alcántara, Luis Robert, Steven Kwan, Dylan Cease, Zac Gallen, and Joe Ryan.
- Baseball America ranked every prospect dealt at this year’s trade deadline.
- The Astros are likely to be without third baseman Isaac Paredes for the rest of the year after he tore his hamstring.
Anders’ picks...
- Man, this looks beautiful.
