Six Mets Among FanGraphs’ Updated Top 100 Prospects

0 4

FanGraphs has released the latest edition of its top 100 MLB prospect rankings. The update has three New York Mets carrying over from the post-spring training list as well as three newcomers.

The three carryovers are right-handers Brandon Sproat (falling from No. 18 to No. 31) and Jonah Tong (rising from No. 90 to No.51), as well as infielder Jett Williams (rising from No. 101 to No. 63). The newcomers are right-hander Nolan McLean at No. 53, outfielder Carson Benge at No. 57 and infielder Jacob Reimer at No. 59.

The Carryovers

It’s no surprise to see Sproat fall thirteen spots in the rankings given his struggles during the first half. Through June 22, the 24 year-old carried a 5.95 ERA over 62 innings for Triple-A Syracuse. If this list had been released a month ago, he likely would have fallen even more. However, in the six starts since, Sproat has turned things around. He’s pitched to a 0.55 ERA while allowing 16 hits, 11 walks and striking out 39 batters over 33 innings during that stretch.

As expected, Tong (age 22) and Williams (age 21) continue to rise up prospects lists. Tong’s dominance has led to a 1.66 ERA, 0.935 WHIP and a league-leading 146 strikeouts over 92 innings. Williams has continued his great season as well after a lost 2024 due to injury. In 386 plate appearances, he is slashing .283/.392/.492/.885 with 29 stolen bases.

The Additions

The highest rising addition is McLean, a hard-throwing right-hander. After dominating Double-A during the first month of the season, the 24-year-old has shown no signs of slowing down in the hitter-friendly International League. In the 14 games since his promotion to Triple-A, McLean has held a 3.01 ERA while allowing 55 hits, 32 walks and striking out 83 batters over 77 2/3 innings.

Benge, a 22-year-old outfielder, has burst onto the scene during his first full season as a professional. The 2024 first-round pick began the year by tuning up in the South Atlantic League with a .897 OPS and 15 stolen bases over 271 plate appearances. Since moving up to Double-A, Benge might have the Mets brass considering another promotion this season. In 101 plate appearances for the affiliate, he is slashing .371/.472/652/1.123. He’s walked (16) more times than he’s struck out (14) and has added an additional four stolen bases.

The last Mets addition to this list is Reimer, a 21 year-old infielder. After posting an .887 OPS with High-A Brooklyn, the 2022 fourth-round pick is holding his own in Binghamton with a .775 OPS in 115 plate appearances.
