Morning Briefing: Mets Make Big Bullpen Moves Before Deadline
Good morning, Mets fans!
Despite the Mets falling to the San Diego Padres by a score of 5-0 on Wednesday, finishing off a disappointing three-game sweep at the hands of San Diego, that finale took a backseat to their deadline moves. After the game, the Mets would go on a bullpen bonanza, acquiring two high-end relief arms and now putting New York’s bullpen amongst the top of the league.
First of those two arms was submarine pitcher Tyler Rogers, who is pitching to an impressive 1.80 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP in 50 innings this season. The package back to San Francisco for Rogers was José Butto, Blade Tidwell and Drew Gilbert; click here for more on the deal. Then the Mets matched the Phillies’ big addition of Jhoan Duran by acquiring a closer of their own in Ryan Helsley from the St. Louis Cardinals for a package of three prospects. Helsley is your prototypical flamethrowing four-seam/slider closer who is pitching to a 3.00 ERA this season. For more on this huge addition, click here.
The Mets’ two big splashes on Wednesday leave the back end of their bullpen loaded, adding these two star relievers to a ‘pen containing Edwin Díaz, along with ancillary pieces such as Ryne Stanek, Brooks Raley, and Reed Garrett. Stearns and co. are not done either, as they are reportedly looking to add an outfield bat before the deadline on Thursday.
