Astros Have Checked In On Mets’ Infield Depth

0 12

The Houston Astros have been in contact with Mets’ brass about a few members of their infield, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, The Mets have had a logjam in the infield for much of the past month. Young infielders Mark Vientos, Ronny Mauricio, and Brett Baty have all earned consistent playing time in Queens. With the Astros’ righty dominant lineup, they’ve asked about left-handed batters Jeff McNeil and Baty, as well as the switch-hitting Mauricio.

McNeil’s situation is a bit different from that of Baty and Maurico. The 33-year-old can man the keystone as well as all three outfield positions serviceably. McNeil has also revamped his hit profile over the last year, adding more power to his game. McNeil is a veteran bat with less to prove than the young infielders, Baty and Maurico, who have shown flashes of greatness but also struggled at times at the major league level. It’s important to note that McNeil has one guaranteed year left on the four-year, $50 million extension he signed after the 2022 season. He’s set to be paid $15.7 million in 2026 and has a team option for 2027 at the same salary. Meanwhile, both Baty and Mauricio don’t enter into arbitration until 2027 and are under team control through the 2029 season. Baty and Maurico are 25 and 24 years old, respectively.

It’s unclear what the Mets would be looking for in return from Houston. The Mets’ bullpen additions are likely over after their acquisitions of Tyler Rogers and Ryan Helsley. This leaves center field and potentially the rotation as the remaining need.
