Elephant Rumblings: No moves yet as trade deadline looms
MLB news roundup
Happy Wednesday, Athletics Nation!
Tomorrow is trade deadline day, and if the A’s have any moves to make, they are saving them for the 11th hour. Thus far, there have been rumors and plenty of speculation, but no trades have materialized—and there are reasons to doubt that they will.
With a 47-63 record, the A’s are looking like sellers. Last month, reports surfaced that the A’s brass can’t wait to trade starting pitcher Luis Severino, who has the biggest contract in A’s history but has yet to deliver on the expectations that come with his three-year, $67 million deal.
Nick Deeds at MLB Trade Rumors indicates that the A’s are also willing to listen to offers for starter Jeffrey Springs, but are seen as unwilling to eat much salary on either Sevy’s or Springs’s “underwater” contracts. Deeds deems it “unlikely” that there are teams desperate enough to take on these contracts—supposing that the A’s might have to package Severino with another player for even a modest return in terms of talent.
However, Sevy is on a good run right now: he notched his first win at Sutter Health Park last night and has won three straight; perhaps this will embolden some team to take a risk on the veteran righty, who continues to flash plenty of upside with his lively fastball.
On the position player front, rumors are percolating around third baseman and outfielder Miguel Andujar.

Andujar is hitting .290 (.422 AVG vs. LHP) and is set to become a free agent after the 2025 season.
Andujar is pretty handy to have around right now with Jacob Wilson, Max Muncy, and Denzel Clarke all on the IL, but he isn’t a key figure in the A’s longer term picture. Miggy has showcased himself nicely in the past week: he’s hit in four straight games, with two doubles last night and a home run on Sunday.
Plenty of other possibilities have been considered, but none of them feel imminent. Everything is up in the air today, but what is to be—or not to be—will surely be settled by tomorrow. We’ll have updates as they become available right here on AN.
