Rumor Roundup: Mets Have Shown Interest in Ryan Helsley
With under 50 hours until the 2025 MLB trading deadline, the Mets are still, seemingly, incredibly active on the trade market. The team already added lefty Gregory Soto to help in the bullpen, but the team still appears to be involved in several other markets.
With so many irons in the fire, let’s take a look at all of the latest news and rumors from Tuesday morning and afternoon.
- Mark Feinsand of MLB reported on Tuesday morning that the Mets are one of roughly half a dozen teams involved in the market for Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley. While teams are interested to “varying degrees,” he reports, he named six teams specifically included in the pending free agent’s market: the “Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, Phillies, Rangers, and Blue Jays.”
- SNY’s Andy Martino reports that there are “a lot of balls” in the air for the Mets, but that Tampa’s Brandon Lowe is a name to keep an eye on, especially considering Stearns tried to get Lowe from the Rays last season
- Buster Olney of ESPN had two interesting notes on the Mets: the price of Joe Ryan and Dylan Cease remains incredibly high, and interested teams, including the Mets, are seemingly yet to meet it.
- He also reports that the Cincinnati Reds are in the market for an infielder and could turn to the Mets if the price on higher-end infielders remains out of their comfort zone. He specifically mentioned “Brett Baty, Luisangel Acuna, Mark Vientos” as options from the Mets, notably not mentioning Ronny Mauricio.
- In a column on Tuesday afternoon, Jon Heyman of the New York Post laid out several pieces of information relative to New York’s two teams and their plans for the deadline. He reports that the Mets have made calls around a starting pitcher, specifically the trio of Ryan, Cease, and MacKenzie Gore.
- If the Mets don’t land a front-line starter, he says the team could be considering a plan to call up one of the “big three” pitching prospects: Brandon Sproat, Nolan McLean, or Jonah Tong. He also says the team doesn’t seem interested in moving any of them in a trade.
- Steve Kwan is a name that Heyman mentioned for the Mets in their search for a center fielder, along with a pair of Baltimore outfielders: Cedric Mullins and Ramon Laureano.
- His final note came for the cross-town Yankees, who he says are not interested in moving Spencer Jones for anyone not named Paul Skenes, who is obviously not available at the deadline.
- Elsewhere in the American League, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports that Padres’ starter Dylan Cease has become the focus of the Astros’ deadline plans, especially as their injuries pile up.
On top of the rumors, the Blue Jays acquired reliever Seranthony Dominguez from the Orioles for their No. 10 ranked prospect, Juaron Watts-Brown.
