Bullpen and Bats Doom Mets in 7-1 Loss to Padres
The Mets (62-46) fell to the Padres (59-49) by a 7-1 score on Tuesday evening at Petco Park.
Despite a quality start from Sean Manaea, who allowed just one run over five innings, the Mets’ bullpen struggled and the offense slumped, managing only four hits — all from the bottom half of the lineup. The loss is their second straight, trimming their NL East lead over the Phillies to just half a game. The Mets will aim to avoid a sweep in tomorrow’s series finale in San Diego.
Manaea got the start for New York, delivering a strong performance through his outing. He allowed just one run on three hits, recording four strikeouts. Manaea’s only run allowed came in the first inning on an RBI single. He quickly settled into his rhythm following, retiring twelve consecutive batters to end his evening.
The Mets struggled at the plate, managing just one hit through the first four innings.
New York rallied to tie the game at 1-1 in the fifth. Brett Baty led off with a walk, followed by a single from Luis Torrens and another walk to Brandon Nimmo to load the bases. Then, with one out, Tyrone Taylor hit a sacrifice fly to even the score. Taylor entered the game in the bottom of the fourth after Juan Soto departed with a contusion (fouled a pitch off his foot).
Jose Buttó took the mound for the sixth, and promptly gave up the lead. He surrendered a leadoff walk, followed by a single, and then a one-out, run-scoring triple to put the Padres ahead 2-1.
Buttó remained in the game for the seventh, where he again ran into trouble, allowing back-to-back singles with no outs. A one-out, two-run double extended San Diego’s lead to 4-1.
Following a groundout and a walk by Buttó, Chris Devenski entered to relieve him and secure the final out of the seventh. However, on his very first pitch thrown, Manny Machado crushed a three-run home run, blowing the game open to a 7-1 Padres advantage and capping a five-run explosive inning. Devenski then settled down for the eighth, allowing only one hit.
Mark Vientos knocked a leadoff single in the ninth, but the Mets could not capitalize.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Sean Manaea
Manaea earns Tuesday’s honor for his outstanding performance on the mound. He threw a five-inning, one-run gem, retiring 12 consecutive batters to end his night. Manaea was efficient, tossing 86 pitches with 64 strikes. The left-hander now boasts an impressive 2.08 ERA through his first four starts of the season after being sidelined by injuries during the first half of the year.
ON DECK
Clay Holmes (9-5, 3.40 ERA) will get the start for New York on Wednesday. In his last time out against the Giants, he threw five innings, allowing just one run on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Yu Darvish (0-3, 9.18 ERA) will take the mound for the Padres. In his last outing versus the Cardinals, he tossed three and 1/3 innings with eight runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out three. It will be his fifth start of the season after rehabbing an elbow injury.
The first pitch is set for 4:10 p.m. on SNY.
