Mariners Game #106 Preview: 7/27 at Anaheim
Hoping the Mariners manage to steer clear of the giant robots and monsters in Roku City
Putting this up top because it’s the most important thing in today’s preview: Today’s game will be televised on Roku. If you have a Roku device, you can find the game by going to the Sports section of the menu—if you’re having trouble, just search for “MLB Leadoff” in the search section. Even if you do not have a Roku device, you can still watch the game on the Roku Channel app, which you can download for free on Amazon Fire devices, Samsung TVs, and Google TVs. And even without one of those, you can access the game on www.therokuchannel.com with no login required. It’s all a bit of a hassle, but as the non-ROOT games go, this one’s pretty accessible.
You can also just skip all this mishegoss and listen to the game on the radio while you go for a walk in this beautiful weather. Bring a kid and put the game on a portable speaker!
Roku is of course the Japanese word for six. So it’s not an inappropriate venue for the Mariners game being played on the day that Ichiro is inducted into Cooperstown. Lookout Landing will have continuing coverage of that from John Trupin, working the shoe leather to get the story on the scene.
The game itself will feature of a matchup of Logan Gilbert v. Kyle Hendricks. Hendricks is making a reasonable go of things in his first season since leaving the Cubs, for whom he’d played since 2014. His ERA is near five but is also a full tick down since last season, and the various ERA estimators generally like him a bit more than that. The crafty righty is no longer a groundball king and the strikeouts are mostly gone, but he’s still got the very good command that’s been his carrying tool for more than a decade. Gilbert, meanwhile, is coming off his best start of the season, when he struck out ten, walked none, and allowed just two hits and zero runs in 6.1 innings against the Brewers.
A subplot to today’s game will be Julio Rodríguez’s quest to homer in four consecutive games for the first time in his career. With last night’s game featuring Cal Raleigh’s 40th home run of the year, and Randy Arozarena’s 20th, we’re also on round number watch, and Julio sits on 18 for the season and 98 for his career. Assuming he gets to 100 this year, he’ll be just the eighth player in MLB history with 100 home runs and 100 stolen bases through his age-24 season, joining Vida Pinson, Cesar Cedeno, Darryl Strawberry, Ronald Acuña Jr., Andruw Jones, Mike Trout, and Alex Rodriguez, who turns 50 years old today.
