Mets Score Late To Salvage Game Against Reds

0 4

After dropping the series and falling short on David Wright Day thanks to another frustrating mix of inconsistent pitching and a quiet offense, the New York Mets managed to flip the script just enough to escape with a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds in the finale. This win marks 22 straight series vs the Reds without being swept and breaks a three-game losing streak.

David Peterson once again gave the Mets exactly what they needed: stability. The lefty tossed six solid innings, allowing just four hits and one run, while walking one and striking out four. Huascar Brazoban followed with a clean, scoreless inning of relief.

The bullpen wasn’t without turbulence. Reed Garrett recorded two outs but issued a walk, prompting Edwin Díaz to enter for a four-out save attempt. Díaz ran into trouble, surrendering a hit and then forcing in the tying run with a hit-by-pitch. Though he ended the inning with a strikeout, Díaz was charged with a blown save, while the earned run went to Garrett.

The Mets’ offense remained shaky despite scoring three runs, showing signs of struggle but doing just enough. Pete Alonso sat out (until coming off the bench late) with a right hand contusion, which the team said wasn’t serious. Mark Vientos started at first base, going 1-for-2 before Alonso pinch-hit and struck out in his lone at-bat. Brandon Nimmo plated Tyrone Taylor in the third with a single, and Luisangel Acuña drove in Brett Baty with a double in the fifth to stretch the lead to two. The Mets would go 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position, leaving eight on base.

In the eighth, Juan Soto and Jeff McNeil reached base, with a walk and a double, setting up Luis Torrens, who grounded sharply to second. Juan Soto broke for home on contact and beat the throw from Matt McLain, putting the Mets back in front. Ryne Stanek secured his second save of the season, an encouraging sign after recent struggles.

Player of the Game: David Peterson

David Peterson once again provided the Mets with much-needed length and relief for a pitching staff that continues to struggle with covering innings, tossing six frames while allowing four hits, one run, and striking out four with just one walk. As the season wears on, Peterson has proven to be a dependable arm in the rotation, capable of halting losing streaks and offering the rest of the staff a break from being overworked or overextended.

On Deck

The Mets are right back at it Monday as the Los Angeles Angels come into town for a three-game set. Kodai Senga (7-3, 1.39 ERA) makes his first start after the All-Star break for the Mets while the Angels throw out Ty Anderson (2-6, 4.34 ERA) on the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 pm ET and will be broadcast on SNY and Mets Radio 880 AM.
