Jonah Tong, Carson Benge Represent Mets in 2025 MLB All-Star Futures Game

Jonah Tong‘s reaction to making the National League’s roster for the Major League Baseball Future All-Star game was very similar to all of ours.

The stars of tomorrow kicked off All-Star weekend in Atlanta on Saturday. The New York Mets had two minor league players selected to play in this year’s All-Star Futures Game: right-handed pitcher Tong (Mets’ No. 2 ranked prospect/ MLB’s No. 59 prospect) and outfielder Carson Benge (Mets’ No. 3 prospect, MLB No. 74 prospect).

Tong so far this season is 6-4 with a 1.83 ERA and 125 strikeouts, which leads all of minor league baseball. The Mets’ seventh-round draft pick from 2022 has had a phenomenal year for Double-A Binghamton, holding opposing batters to a .141 batting average.

Benge is another future star of tomorrow who has had a breakout season. He has split the first half of this season between Single-A Brooklyn and Double-A Binghamton. With Double-A, he is batting .302 (which is also what he batted with Brooklyn)/ .444/.512, with a .956 OPS. He had three doubles, two home runs, seven RBIs, and 10 runs scored.

They were the two minor league all-stars who represented the Mets’ organization Saturday evening in Atlanta.

Tong and Benge came away on the victorious side of the Futures Game as the National League’s young stars defeated the American League 4-2.

Tong pitched the top of the second for the National League squad. He tossed a scoreless frame and struck out Seattle Mariners prospect Harry Ford.

The American League took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the third. George Lombard Jr. walked and stole second before Max Clark singled to put two on, advancing Lombard to third. Braden Montgomery then grounded out to the right side, which allowed Lombard to score to make it a 1-0 American League lead.

They extended their lead in the top of the fourth. Josue Briceño tripled to center field, and Sebastian Walcott followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Briceño and made it a 2-0 AL lead.

The National League youngsters took over the game and took the lead over the American League in the fourth. Back-to-back singles by Zyhir Hope and Jesús Made led the way for a three-run home run by Josue De Paula that gave the National League a 3-2 lead over the AL.

Later in the inning with two on, Owen Caissie doubled to score LuJames Groover and extend the NL’s lead to 4-2.

Benge entered the game for the National League in the top of the fifth in left field in substitution of Dodgers prospect Josue De Paula. Benge came to bat in the bottom of the fifth and flew out to left field to end that inning.

He remained in the game to finish out the seven-inning matchup between in the AL and the NL that ended with the National League on top 4-2 in a fun battle of the futures of tomorrow.

So far, the National League is undefeated for All-Star week 2025, which continues on Monday with the Home Run Derby at 8 PM EST Monday night and the MLB All-Star Game Tuesday.

Tuesday night will feature four Mets All-Stars: Shortstop Francisco Lindor, who will start the game for the NL; Infielder Pete Alonso, left-handed pitcher David Peterson, and right-handed closer Edwin Díaz.

Before the Future’s Game kicked off, the NL prospects took the field to launch homers in batting practice. Konnor Griffin of the Pirates won the unofficial tourny, driving out eight, but Benge clubbed seven, good for the second most of the field.

Benge has clubbed only six homers this season, but the BP pop could be indicative of another gear within his game. The Mets’ 2024 first-round pick started the season in Brooklyn, a park notorious for hindering left-handed power. He’s already clubbed two homers in 13 games with Binghamton.

“Getting out of Brooklyn with the wind always blowing in, that’s pretty nice,” Benge said before the Future’s Game on his promotion to Double-A. “Sticking to my same approach hasn’t led me wrong yet.”
