The Mariners play their penultimate game before the All-Star Break

The Mariners don’t get any time to luxuriate in handing Tarik Skubal his worst start of the season in a blowout win, having to turn around for an early game today against another tough pitcher in Casey Mize. Today’s game is currently in a delay, because why have nice weather in the middle of July in the various MLB ballparks that refuse to build a roof? The thing that’s tricky about this timing-wise is any significant delay will make the game run into the MLB Futures Game, which is scheduled to start at 1 PM PT, because the big-brain geniuses at MLB decided the best way to pitch the future of the sport was by burying it during the weekend of the draft while games are still being played.

Speaking of the draft, that starts tomorrow at 3 PM PT; fill your rain delay by reading this excellent primer from Max on what the first few rounds of the draft could look like, or this one that I did laying out a few different approaches the Mariners could take with their first three picks.

Lineups:

Casey Mize has been recently named an All-Star, replacing Garrett Crochet. That gives the Tigers an MLB-best six All-Stars.

Game Information:

Game time: scheduled for 10:10 AM, but the game will begin in a delay, as noted above

TV: ROOT SPORTS with Brad Adam and Angie Mentink on the call

Radio: Seattle Sports (710 AM) with Rick Rizzs and Gary Hill Jr. on the call

Programming Note:

Today is also the MiLB Futures Game, which will feature four Mariners prospects: OF Lazaro Montes, INF Colt Emerson, C Harry Ford, and switch-pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje. Game time is 1 PM PT, and the game will air on MLB Network and MLB TV. We will have a separate game thread for the Futures Game closer to game time.

Today in Mariners History:

  • 1987 - Mark Langston made his first All-Star appearance and pitched two perfect innings. Langston struck out three of the six batters he faced but the National League triumphed 2-0 in 13 innings.
  • 1988 - Harold Reynolds participated in his second straight All-Star game, becoming the first Mariners player to appear in back-to-back games.
  • 2011 - Michael Pineda pitches a perfect 3rd inning with 2 strikeouts in the 82nd All-Star game in Phoenix. Félix Hernández (DNP) and Brandon League (1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R) were also selected to play in the game (NL 5, AL 1).
  • 2014 - Fernando Rodney is added to the American League All-Star team, becoming the 4th Mariners All-Star in 2014, the most since having 5 in 2003.
  • 2024 – Andrés Muñoz named an AL All-Star for the first time in his career.
