All-Star break or All-Star Breakthrough?

Welcome back to another week of Mariners Reacts Surveys!

It’s slowly becoming my favorite time of year, as we head towards the Midsummer Classic and the trade deadline. The wheat will be separated from the chaff, the buyers from the sellers, and the playoff teams from those doomed to mathematical elimination.

Last time we spoke, we asked who you thought would be the first Mariners' All-Star this year; the results were...well, let’s say lopsided:

I mean, I’m not surprised. Cal has moved himself into the GOAT Mariners catcher conversation in the space of half a season. He was always going to be an All-Star. But Muñoz has been damn near perfect all year, and Julio has been playing very well—albeit not at the level some would hope—so far this season. He wasn’t mentioned in the poll, but I also thought we would see some shout-outs for J.P. Crawford in the comments, but I suppose not.

This week, now that we know the announcements for the Mariners All-Star reps—Cal, Muñoz, Julio, and Woo—we need to ask whose performance denoted an All-Star selection. I’ll be more specific. I like Julio. I think he's had a solid year, playing well, having great defense, and being very solid at the plate, but should he be an All-Star? While he’s playing well, the only thing that's really popped off the page for me is the defense; everything else has been pretty pedestrian. Julio is only slashing .247/.345/.391 with 102 OPS+. Is this performance deserving of an All-Star selection? Let us know what you think in the survey below.

On to happier news, Cal Raleigh has decided to grace the Home Run Derby with his massive dumper. Only eight players, including Cal, have participated in the derby over the team's history: Ken Griffey Jr., Edgar Martinez, Jay Buhner, Bret Boone, Alex Rodriguez, Robinson Canó, and Julio Rodríguez. The only one of them to have won is Griffey, though Julio did set a record for most homers in a single round. I think Cal has the chance to be the second Mariner to win the Derby. I, for one, welcome our new thick Home Run Overlord. Let us know if you think Cal has what it takes in the survey below!

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the MLB. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Seattle Mariners fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.
