MLB news roundup

Morning A’s fans!

The Athletics missed their superstar shortstop Jacob Wilson last night, but considering the lopsided score he probably wouldn’t have made a game-changing difference. He was predictably out of the starting lineup due to that hit by pitch he suffered to his wrist on Tuesday night. He immediately left the game and A’s fans held their breath, hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. Luckily for both Wilson and the A’s he had dodged a bullet as it was reported immediately after the game that the 22-year-old had undergone x-rays, which came back negative:

For those keeping count, he’s now dealt with a hamstring issue, missed some games because of a foul ball off his knee, and now this. And he’s still played in most of the Athletics’ games in the first half. From the sound of it from manager Mark Kotsay before yesterday’s game, it seems like Wilson is showing signs of progress, giving hope to the team and A’s fans that he could be back before the end of the first half:

There are only four games left to go for the A’s, so do they really want to push it with their best player? Wilson has also been selected to start the All-Star Game, which means he won’t be getting a full week of rest like the rest of his teammates (outside of Brent Rooker, of course). The other worry is that the x-ray missed a microfracture that could end up costing him serious time. It’s a rare occurrence, but it can and does happen. Knock on wood.

Yesterday Max Muncy slid over to shortstop, and that seems like what the team would do if Wilson is down for the final four games and beyond. We may not see him in tonight’s series finale based on Wednesday’s update, but getting in one final game before the break might not be the worst idea if his wrist can handle it. This team can’t afford to be taking risks with their young stars, but we all want to see him represent the A’s as the starting shortstop for the American League. Take my wrist!

Have a great day everyone!
