Cole Ragans has been transferred to the 60-day IL, Mark Canha has been placed on the 10-day IL, and Cam Devanney has been selected from the minor league roster. Devanney is not in tonight’s starting lineup as announced.
Ragans being moved to the 60-day IL should not be of any concern to Royals fans. He was never going to be back before he’d been gone 60 days anyway. While Mark Canha did hit a home run over the weekend, he has a season-long wRC+ of only 49 and doesn’t play defense particularly well anymore. The team will, unfortunately, likely not miss his on-field contributions.
Cam Devanney, along with Drew Waters, Nick Loftin, John Rave, and Jac Caglianone, has done very well at AAA Omaha this year. He has slashed .272/.366/.565/.931, which is good for a 138 wRC+. If and when he gets into a game, he will become the seventh player to make his major league debut this season. The previous players to do so are Tyler Tolbert, Rave, Andrew Hoffmann, Noah Cameron, Evan Sisk, and Caglianone.
Devanney was acquired from the Brewers in 2023 along with Ryan Brady for relief pitcher Taylor Clarke. Clarke, of course, rejoined the Royals this past offseason, and Brady is still in the Royals' minor league system. That means the Royals won that trade. I don’t make the rules, I’m just letting you know.
The Royals have struggled badly on offense all year. Devanney is the last guy in the minors who seems remotely capable of making a difference for this team. Of course, seeing how it went for all of the others, I wouldn’t get my hopes too high. That said, ZiPS projects him to around an 81 wRC+, which would easily lead all Royals outfielders.
