Morning Briefing: Alonso Will Not Participate in Home Run Derby

Off the diamond this weekend, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com announced that Pete Alonso will not participate in the Home Run Derby during the All-Star weekend in Atlanta. Alonso has participated in the Home Run Derby in every full season since 2019, winning in it in 2019 and 2021. There was no derby during the shortened 2020 season.

The Mets dropped the third game of the Subway Series to the Yankees on Sunday, by a score of 6-4. However, the Mets captured the series by winning the first two games against their neighboring foes.
The Mets will have an off-day on Monday, before traveling South to Baltimore to face off against the Orioles. Game one of that series will be 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday with Clay Holmes (8-4, 2.99 ERA) facing off against Brandon Young (0-3, 7.02 ERA).
Laura Albanese of Newsday reported that Kodai Senga could start on July 13 against the Royals, if he recovers well from his rehab outing.
DiComo also reported that Jesse Winker could come off the IL and rejoin the Mets on July 8 in Baltimore.
Winker has had some success in his rehab assignments, including this two-run homer for the Syracuse Mets on Sunday.

MLB announced the All-Star rosters for the American and National League on Sunday night. The full lists featured 19 first-timers, and many up-and-coming young stars.
Francisco Lindor will start for the NL at shortstop, while Alonso and Edwin Díaz made the squad as reserves.
Jeff Passan of ESPN reported that the Nationals fired general manager Mike Rizzo and manager Dave Martinez on Sunday night.
Sean Wright reported that the Brewers are calling up Andrew Vaughn in the wake of Rhys Hoskins’ injury. Vaughn was acquired from the White Sox last month for Aaron Civale.
Nick Deeds of mlbtraderumors details Bryan Reynolds‘ limited no-trade clause. As the trade deadline approaches, Reynolds is a player who could be dealt. However, his no-trade clause features six contenders who may be interested in his services.
Prior to Sunday’s game against the Mets, the Yankees signed RHP Geoff Hartlieb to a major league contract. As a corresponding move they optioned LHP Jayvien Sandridge to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The Braves selected RHP Jesse Chavez to the major league roster after optioning LHP Dylan Dodd to Triple-A Gwinnett after Saturday’s game. They moved RHP Spencer Schwellenbach to the 60-day IL to make move on the 40-man roster.
