Juan Soto Delivers in 2025 Subway Series Rematch

0 2

After Juan Soto signed an eight-year contract with the Mets during the offseason, most looked ahead to the 2025 Subway Series reunion between himself and the Yankees. Many asked how would Soto perform against his former team. And what would a series of games between Aaron Judge and Soto look like now that they’re in opposite dugouts?

May’s first edition of the Subway Series at Yankee Stadium left many fans very disappointed as the slumping Soto went 1-for-10 with a combined four walks, two runs scored, and three strikeouts. But Friday was a shot for redemption that Soto did not miss.

Soto’s first — and arguably most important mark — came in the bottom of the first. Down 2-0 and facing former Met Marcus Stroman, Soto ripped a fastball to the opposite field at 104.6 miles per hour to tie the game.

It was the first homer of July for Soto, and continued his hot play that earned him National League Player of the Month honors for June. It also gave the Mets new life after Justin Hagenman served up back-to-back homers to Jasson Domínguez and Judge to begin the fourth of July.

The next mark came in the bottom of the third, where Soto lined his 15th double of the season with one out. The hit set up Pete Alonso, who promptly smacked a hard-hit single off Anthony Volpe‘s glove for the third run of the game and first lead of the day for the Mets.

Overall, Soto was 3-for-4, with two RBIs and two runs scored in the Mets’ 6-5 win over the Yankees. His third hit was a single in the bottom of the fifth, falling a triple short of the cycle. Soto had owned Stroman coming into Friday’s matchup, and after the day is now 6-for-13 with four extra-base hits against the righty.

With the performance against his former team, Friday also displayed the insanity that came with the earlier discussions surrounding Soto this season. It was a time when many fans wondered if the former Yankee was having regrets crossing over from the Bronx to Queens or if he wasn’t meshing with his new teammates. And to be fair, he did slash just .219/.345/.448 in the month of May.

But since June 1, Soto has been dominant. He’s slashing .337/.481/.721 with 12 homers and 28 walks. Soto’s slashline is now up to .266/.399/.516, and his bat continues to ignite in the way fans were waiting for. He’s been by far the best player in the NL and seems to be enjoying his time in Queens.

This game provided the fireworks that Yankees and Mets fans were both looking for. It included home runs, big hits, RBIs, and runs scored by both Judge and Soto. The storyline finally delivered. Both big bats delivered. Mets fans came out on the happier end of Friday’s game, but both Yankees and Mets fans got the story they were waiting for – the true battle of the bats of Judge and Soto.

Friday is more of what we should all expect of this rivalry over the next 15 years. The storyline continues Saturday and Sunday at Citi Field.
