Bryan Woo tries to get things turned around for the Mariners

After a disappointing close to their series against the Royals last night, the Mariners don’t have time to lick their wounds, as the Pirates arrive in town for a three-game set before the Mariners finally get an off-day before heading out on another grueling road trip to close up their schedule before the break.

Lineups:

The Mariners roll out their righty lineup against Pirates starter Bailey Felter. Dylan Moore gets the start today; his last start, against Royals lefty Noah Cameron, did not go well, and it’s starting to feel like DMo is running out of chances to turn around his dreadful June.

Mitch Garver gets the start at catcher as Cal Raleigh gets a DH day—call that a half-day-off for Seattle’s perpetually overworked catcher.

News:

MLB handed out their monthly awards yesterday; Cal Raleigh won AL Player of the Month, but the Pirates had their own monthly winner, too: closer David Bednar was named NL Reliever of the Month.

Captain’s Log:

Dan Wilson on Dylan Moore’s struggles:

“He’s been working hard here and trying to iron some thing out. And obviously he’s a guy that, especially in high leverage situations against lefties, has been so good for him, so just trying to get him back to that confidence and consistency, so today is a chance to get out there from the start and get some consistent at-bats.”

Game Information:

Game time: 1:10 PT

TV: ROOT Sports with Aaron Goldsmith and Ryan Rowland-Smith on the call and Jen Mueller serving as field reporter

Radio: Seattle Sports (710 AM) with Rick Rizzs, Gary Hill Jr. and Angie Mentink on the call.

Today in Mariners History:

  • 1985: Mike Moore pitches a complete game and Dave Henderson records four hits including a home run in a 7-1 win over the Brewers, the Mariners’ first-ever July 4 win at home. This accomplishment is overshadowed by the Rick Camp Game.
  • 1991: Jay Buhner has his first two-homer game of his career, both off Greg Hibbard, in the Mariners 3-2 win vs. the White Sox.
  • 2010: Ichiro and Cliff Lee are elected to the All Star team. It is Ichiro’s tenth selection, and Lee’s second.
  • 2022: Julio Rodríguez homers to the third deck of the Western Metal Supply Co. building in left field at Petco Park in San Diego in Mariners 8-2 win over San Diego. Julio became the fastest player in MLB history to reach 15+ homers and 20+ stolen bases, reaching the milestone in just 81 career games.
  • 2023: Logan Gilbert tosses a complete game shutout while Mike Ford finishes with 4 hits and a triple shy of the cycle on his birthday in 6-0 win at San Francisco.
