David Peterson Bounces Back as Mets Win Series Over Brewers
The Mets won a series for the first time in three weeks upon beating the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 in a nail-biter on Thursday night.
The top half of the lineup carried the Mets’ offense. Brandon Nimmo followed up his grand slam yesterday with a solo shot off former teammate Jose Quintana to put New York up 1-0 in the second. With the game tied 1-1 in the sixth, Starling Marte and Francisco Lindor both singled before Juan Soto snuck through a single of his own to drive in Marte. Pete Alonso subsequently doubled home Lindor with what ended up being the winning run.

David Peterson bounced back from two straight bad outings, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits with four strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings. It was the longest any Mets starter has lasted since June 17, when Peterson pitched into the eighth against the Atlanta Braves.
The Mets’ bullpen followed suit with a great night of their own. Ryne Stanek got the last out of the seventh and completed a perfect outing in the eighth. Edwin Díaz then nailed down the save in the ninth. Both Stanek and Díaz also pitched last night in the Mets’ 7-3 win.
A huge overturned call benefitted the Mets in the top of the ninth. After singling off Díaz, Christian Yelich appeared to steal second base. A review, however, showed that Lindor had in fact made the last-second tag on a perfect throw by Luis Torrens.
“It’s a good series win, especially against a team that is going to be right there at the end,” manager Carlos Mendoza said after the game.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Peterson came up with a much-needed quality outing on the same day the Mets placed yet another starting pitcher, Paul Blackburn, on the injured list with a right shoulder impingement.
ON DECK
The Mets and Yankees face off at Citi Field on Independence Day – just as our forefathers would have wanted. The Mets haven’t officially named a starter yet to replace Blackburn, though they may very well call on Justin Hagenman after he was promoted from Triple-A Syracuse. They will face another familiar face in Marcus Stroman (1-1), who has an 8.16 ERA in four starts this year but is coming off a solid outing vs. the Athletics in his return from the IL. Game time is 3:10 p.m. EST, and coverage will air on SNY.
