NFL Today: Chargers Could Regress

0 7
Will Dissly stepped up last year, but remains a weak Fantasy option. (Pro Football Network)

This week, with one season left on his three-year deal, defensive end Ogbo Okoronkwo was sent packing by Cleveland; Seattle added some experience to its young group of cornerbacks by bringing Shaquill Griffin back for a second stint with the team; and Gerry Philbin – a superb pass rusher who helped the Jets win the Super Bowl in 1968 – passed away at the age of 83. Other Fantasy football stories we’re following include…

Will Dissly Coming Off Career Year

After winning just five games in 2023, the Los Angeles Chargers rode a suffocating defense and surged to 11 victories last year. Unfortunately, many believe regression is coming and that the team will be hard pressed to win even nine times in 2025.

Still, the general consensus is that the offense will be better this year and among the reasons was the 2024 breakout of tight end Will Dissly. We correctly identified him as a sleeper for MNF in late-October and it turns out that became a real before-and-after moment for him.

In the first five games, Dissly had failed to haul in more than four catches, but he pulled in a season-best eight grabs that game, the first of four performances of at least four receptions from that point on, with some big plays included in that run (see video below). So, despite playing just 15 games in his first season with the Chargers, he set new career highs with 50 receptions, 64 targets and 24 first downs.

Okay, so Dissly managed a mere 16 yards in the Wild Card game to Houston, but seriously? You can’t pin that loss on him given how poorly Justin Herbert played that day.

While Dissly has taken over as TE1 for the Chargers, he’s still offers little more than depth on a Fantasy squad, and it wouldn’t be a shock if at some point this season he loses snaps to sleeper rookie Oronde Gadsden II, the Chargers’ fifth round pick. Still, for a dude that hails from a state not known for producing high-end talent (Montana), Dissly has exceedede his projection as an above-average backup.

Dallas Seeking Bounce Back

After posting three straight 12-win efforts, the wheels came off for the Dallas Cowboys last year as they plummeted to just seven victories, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2020 in the process.

Both the offense and defense cratered, and believe it or not, having the offense rank 17th in yardage was the best statistical result they managed.

Having said that, one dude the ‘Boys don’t have to worry about is wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. Despite a holdout last summer, he still posted a fine campaign – even with regular QB Dak Prescott missing half the season.

After perfect attendance for the previous two seasons, Lamb missed two games last year with an AC joint injury, yet still managed to top 100 receptions for the third straight time, so small wonder that this year – with his regular QB back – he’s a slam dunk to post at least 750 yards receiving (-2000 as per FanDuel).

Now that the rehab process is done, expect him to be a top four WR for 2025, especially with George Pickens aboard to help ease coverage.
