The long wait is over, as Tanner McDougal snapped a four-year losing streak with a Sunday win! | Tanner McDougal/Instagram

Tanner McDougal snaps his 20-game losing streak, while Colson Montgomery stays HOT

Toledo Mud Hens 5, Charlotte Knights 3 (Statcast box)
The Knights (40-41) have crept back towards .500 and still won the series against the Mud Hens (41-40), 4-2, but they fell short Sunday and were defeated, 5-3, to close out the series. Colson Montgomery has been hot lately, and he smashed two more home runs on Sunday, marking 11 on the season. In his last 10 games (41 ABs) he is slashing .317/.356/.780 with a 1.136 OPS, behind only Brooks Baldwin. If you slim it down to the last five games, his numbers are even more insane: .500/.522/1.227 with a 1.749 OPS!!! He’s maintained a solid performance in the past month, so maybe he’s starting to figure it out a bit more.

Outside of Colson, however, the offense was a bit flat. They posted six hits, and Korey Lee had two of them, but they could not for the life of them score in key situations. Charlotte went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position, and left six on base as a team. They put pressure on the Mud Hens in the top of the eighth after Colson’s second dinger (back-to-back walks), but Joshua Palacios was caught stealing third and a measly ground out ended the threat after that.

The pitching wasn’t much better, and Evan McKendry got beat up a bit and allowed four runs on four hits — including one home run — while also walking three and striking out five to earn his sixth loss of the season. The bullpen only gave up three more hits the rest of the game and combined for three strikeouts, but Toledo scored one more run off of Jairo Iriarte in the eighth to make it 5-4, and the Knights were unable to come back.

Birmingham Barons 2, Knoxville Smokies 1
Tanner McDougal made his 16th start of the season and his third with the Barons (41-34), and he continued to dominate as Birmingham defeated the Smokies (35-39), 2-1, to tie the series at three apiece. McDougal threw for five scoreless innings and gave up five hits and two walks while striking out eight. He’s now sitting at a 1.76 ERA in his three Birmingham starts and has a combined 2.96 ERA in his 16 MiLB starts.

Believe it or not, Tanner before today Tanner had lost 20 games in a row, across four levels of play. He got the win in his very first pro game, in rookie ball, in 2021. That’s it!

The bullpen was solid behind McDougal, giving up just two more hits in the final four innings, and Zach Franklin allowed the lone run after a walk -> stolen base -> RBI. Franklin struck out the last batter to get out of the inning and seal the win, which was much-needed since the offense struggled to score throughout the game even with nine hits, and went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

The Barons were getting on base plenty, and even walked (four) more than they struck out (two), but they weren’t getting timely hits, which was the main issue. William Bergolla and Caden Connor both put up multi-hit games, and Connor accounted for both RBIs.

Greensboro Grasshoppers 7, Winston-Salem Dash 0
The Dash (28-46) had a brutal game to wrap up their series, getting shut out 7-0, and one-hit by the Grasshoppers (52-22) to boot, for a 1-5 series. Dylan Cumming made his third start and essentially was an opener for three innings before the bullpen took over. All things considered, he wasn’t too bad and gave up just one run on three hits and struck out three. He ended up being charged for the loss, but he arguably did the best of all of the pitchers. Such is life in baseball.

Out of the bullpen, Jack Young and Vince Vannelle each gave up a home run and two and three earned runs, respectively. By that point, the Dash were fighting a six-run deficit, but Gil Luna gave up one more run in the bottom of the eighth.

Offensive opportunities definitely existed for Winston-Salem, though they only got one hit — a soft line drive from Jeral Perez in the top of the third. The Dash also drew five walks, and went 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position. Had they scored the six they left on base, they still would have lost, unfortunately. But any offense would have been nice in this one.

Fredericksburg Nationals 4, Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 1
The Ballers (35-40) scored first and never again, ultimately taking the 4-1 loss to the Nationals (35-39) to split the series with three wins each. Kaleb Sophy did not have his best performance, and allowed three earned runs on four hits and three walks, and struck out three in his 4 1⁄3 innings of work. The bullpen allowed four more hits for the remainder of the game, including a solo homer given up by Jonathan Clark in the bottom of the eighth that put the exclamation point on the Nationals win.

The Kanny offense had seven hits on the day, out-hit by just one, but they went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left seven on base. Nathan Archer was the lone batter with more than one hit (2-for-4), but Abraham Núñez drove in the sole run for Kannapolis in the top of the second on an infield base hit.
