Cup of Coffee: Harrison, Rivera make Worcester, Portland debuts; Clarke returns

0 1
6/27 Cup of Coffee:
Thursday's slate featured a few noteworthy debuts on the pitching side of things and not much scoring for Boston's affiliates. Kyle Harrison, a key piece of the Rafael Devers trade, made his organizational debut in Worcester's loss to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Eduardo Rivera, who was recently promoted, made his first start at the Double-A level in Portland's loss to Binghamton. Brandon Clarke (pictured) struck out three over two innings in his first start for Greenville in more than a month. Down in the Dominican Summer League, Josue Brito went deep for the fifth time in 15 games.

Kyle Harrison, acquired from San Francisco in the blockbuster Rafael Devers trade earlier this month, made his organizational debut in getting the start for Worcester on Thursday night. The 23-year-old lefty went four innings, yielding four earned runs on eight hits (including one home run), one walk, and four strikeouts. He threw 76 pitches (51 strikes) and induced 12 whiffs while averaging 94.7 mph and topping out at 96.3 mph with his four-seam fastball. Fellow southpaw Chris Murphy (rehab), Wyatt Olds, and Isaiah Campbell combined for four scoreless frames out of the bullpen.

Vaughn Grissom led the way offensively by going 2 for 3 with two runs driven in on a first-inning sacrifice fly and an eighth-inning RBI single. Kristian Campbell, who scored on both of those occasions, went 1 for 2 with one walk. Jhostynxon Garcia and Blaze Jordan, meanwhile, also drew walks in the process of going 1 for 3. Seby Zavala doubled in the seventh inning for his side's only extra-base hit.

Eduardo Rivera took the loss in his Double-A debut after allowing two earned runs on three hits, a season-high five walks, and six strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings. The 22-year-old lefty threw 99 pitches (53 strikes), generating 13 swings and misses. Righties Jorge Juan and Zach Bryant combined for 3 2/3 scoreless frames of relief. Zach Ehrhard provided the only offense for Portland by going 1 for 4 with a leadoff home run in the top of the first. Caden Rose singled and stole his ninth base of the season.

After missing the better part of the last five weeks because of a blister issue, Brandon Clarke returned to the mound and got the start for Greenville on Thursday night. The 22-year-old lefty allowed one earned run on no hits, two walks, one hit by pitch, and three strikeouts in two innings. Shea Sprague, Cooper Adams (who gave up Rome's only hit), and Matt McShane (who was credited with the win) combined for 11 additional strikeouts across nine scoreless frames of relief. On the flip side, Will Turner plated and Johanfran Garcia scored both of the Drive's runs. Yophery Rodriguez went 2 for 5 with two stolen bases. Freili Encarnacion tripled, and Justin Riemer drew three walks.

Yhoiker Fajardo was interrupted by the rain early on but still went 2 1/3 innings in his second start for Salem. The 18-year-old righty allowed four earned runs on five hits, one walk, and two strikeouts. He threw 55 pitches (35 strikes) and induced nine swings and misses. Adam Bates yielded two additional runs in the fourth, while PJ Labriola tossed two scoreless frames and Nathanael Cruz gave up one run in the ninth. At the plate, Karim Ayubi stood out by going 2 for 4 with an RBI triple and one run scored. Starlyn Nunez and Yoeilin Cespedes each had two hits as well. Enddy Azocar went 1 for 2 with one run scored and two walks.

-----

Dalvinson Reyes had another rough start and fell to 0-3 on the season. The young righty surrendered seven earned runs on three hits (including one home run), three walks, two hit by pitches, and one strikeout in 1 2/3 innings. Denison Sanchez, Wuilliams Rodriguez, and Gilbel Galvan did not fare much better out of the bullpen, as they combined to allow six additional runs over 6 1/3 frames of relief. Alexander Mambel led the way offensively by going 2 for 4 with one double and two runs scored out of the nine-hole. Justin Barry also doubled for his lone hit of the afternoon. Jhoan Peguero, who pinch-hit for Anderson Fermin in the top of the third, and Gerardo Rodriguez both recorded RBI singles. Yan Cruz drew two walks and scored one run.

-----

Eliezer Alfonzo paced the Blue squad's lineup, going 3 for 5 with two RBIs, two runs scored, and one stolen base. Hector Ramos went 2 for 3 with one double, one RBI, two runs scored, and one walk. Josue Brito cranked a two-run shot for his fifth homer of the season and drew two walks as part of a 1-for-3 showing. Maikol Tovar also went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Stiven De La Cruz drove in one run and drew one walk. Oscar Vaamonde got the start and went the first three innings, allowing just one unearned run on no hits, one walk, two hit by pitches, and four strikeouts. Wascar Berroa (making his professional debut) and Edwin Darville (originally the starting DH) combined for three scoreless frames of relief.

-----

Williams Montero put together a solid start for the Red squad, allowing just one unearned run on three hits, no walks, and six strikeouts over four innings. Angelo Ladera surrendered three earned runs in the fifth inning and was charged with the loss as a result. Breylin Cruz went three innings and gave up one unearned run. At the plate, Miguel Rivera drew one walk and hit his first professional home run as part of a 1-for-3 day. Franklin Primera doubled in one run and scored another, while Jhorman Bravo scored once and stole his fourth base of the year.

Player of the Day: Matt McShane gets the nod for some impressive work out of the Greenville bullpen on Thursday night. Since being promoted from Salem in late April, the 22-year-old righty has posted a 3.96 ERA with 31 strikeouts to seven walks in 13 relief appearances (25 innings) for the Drive. Acquired from the Pirates for Chase Shugart in January, McShane is currently ranked as the No. 38 prospect in the organization.
