Mets Swept in Atlanta, Losing Streak Hits 6

The Mets issued nine walks, including two with the bases loaded, went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, and the Braves finished off a three-game sweep Thursday with a 7-1 victory at Truist Park. The Mets have lost six in a row to fall into a first-place tie with the Phillies, whom they visit this weekend.

Clay Holmes (7-4) walked the lead-off man in the fourth and fifth innings and they came around to score each time. He also walked Drake Baldwin with two outs and the bases loaded in the fifth, giving the Braves (34-39) a 2-1 lead. Ball four to Baldwin was Holmes’ career-high 104th pitch and his last offering. Huascar Brazobán relieved him and walked Ozzie Albies on four pitches to force in another run.

Brazobán allowed a hit and walked two more in the sixth before Matt Olson broke the game open with a three-run double that made it 6-1. Holmes walked six in all, a career high. He gave up three runs on four hits in 4 2/3 innings, struck out five  and his ERA jumped to 3.04.

Spencer Strider (2-5) threw six innings of one-run ball and struck out eight.

Ronny Mauricio singled in a run with two outs in the second inning to open the scoring, his first hit with a runner in scoring position in a dozen at-bats. Albies tied the game with an RBI single in the fourth.

Prior to this stretch, the Mets hadn’t lost more than three straight all season.

Stat of the Game

With Thursday’s 1-for-8 performance, New York is 6-for-42 (.143) with RISP during the losing streak.

Player of the Game

This is more of a career achievement award. Juan Soto (1-for-4) singled in the first inning for his 1,000th career hit. He has 215 home runs, 15 triples, 193 doubles, and 577 singles. He is the third player to reach at least 200 homers, 1,000 hits and 700 walks before turning 27. Hall of Famers Mel Ott and Mickey Mantle are the others.

On Deck

A trip to Philadelphia for a three-game set with first place on the line. Both teams are 45-30. Zack Wheeler (7-2, 2.76 ERA) goes for the Phillies and the Mets starter is TBD. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. ET, and the game will air on Apple TV+.
