Morning Briefing: Shohei Ohtani To Pitch For Dodgers Today
Good morning, Mets fans!
Two big and abrupt pieces of news dropped in the baseball world on Sunday night.
Robert Murray of FanSided was the first to report that the Boston Red Sox sent Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. Jeff Passan of ESPN later confirmed the report and the full package. The Red Sox will receive LHP Kyle Harrison, RHP Jordan Hicks, outfield prospect James Tibbs and another prospect. The Red Sox will not be sending any money to the Giants to cover the more-than-$250 million left on Devers’ contract.
Later in the evening, the Los Angeles Dodgers randomly announced that Shohei Ohtani will be their starting pitcher on Monday against the San Diego Padres. As Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register wrote, the plan had been for Ohtani to continue building up in live batting practice, but he was “getting antsy.” It will be Ohtani’s first pitching appearance since August 2023, and his first for the Dodgers. He’ll continue to DH after his pitching outing is over — a rule unique to Ohtani and Ohtani alone in Major League Baseball.

Latest MLB News
Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reported that Roki Sasaki has stopped throwing in the past few days. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said that Sasaki’s shoulder is uncomfortable when throwing with intensity. Sasaki will not go back for further testing, but there is no timetable for return. It sounded as though there was a chance we have seen Sasaki pitch for the last time in 2025.
However, Roberts sounded more optimistic postgame, as Ardaya reported. He said Sasaki is pain-free and should start building up soon. Ultimately, the timetable is unclear on Sasaki.
Sasaki was a highly touted propsect coming out of the NPB last season, and ultimately signed with the Dodgers this offseason. He has pitched eight times this season, with his last outing being on May 9. Sasaki landed on the IL with shoulder impingement.
Andrew Golden of the Washington Post was the first to report that the Nationals are calling up their No. 3 prospect, Brady House. The 2021 first-round draft pick has an .873 OPS in Triple-A this season. This will be House’s MLB debut.
