David Peterson Tosses First Career Shutout
David Peterson delivered an absolute masterpiece on Wednesday evening. The southpaw pitched the first complete game of his career and led the Mets to a dominant 5-0 win over the division rival Nationals.
Peterson was in total control from the first pitch to the last, scattering six hits while striking out six and walking none.
With the stellar outing, the southpaw trimmed his season ERA to 2.49, good for fifth-best in the National League among qualified pitchers.
Efficiency was the name of the game. Peterson carved through Washington’s lineup with precision, needing just over 80 pitches to get through the first seven innings.
He ran into his only real trouble in the eighth, when a one-out double by Luis García Jr. threatened to spoil the shutout, but the Mets’ defense picked up the slack. A base hit to center field looked destined to plate the Nationals’ first run, until Tyrone Taylor came up firing and cut down García at home.
Entering the dugout after that inning, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza approached Peterson, a tough decision on his mind.
“Let me finish this thing,” Peterson told him, and out for the ninth he went.
From there, it was smooth sailing. Peterson fanned James Wood for his sixth strikeout of the night with one out before inducing a routine grounder to third to seal the shutout victory. The grounder was fitting, considering that Peterson ranks in the 94th percentile across MLB in ground ball rate among qualified pitchers.

What stood out on Wednesday was a subtle but significant tweak to his game plan. Over the last two seasons, Peterson has typically been a sinker-first pitcher. Instead, on Wednesday, he turned to his four-seam fastball.
Nearly 30% of his pitches were straight heaters, and the pitch was working. Both the velocity and spin rate on his fastball were up compared to his season averages, helping it play better at the top of the zone and complement his sinker-slider combo. The result? A gem.
