Jac Caglianone enjoys his first four-hit day.

Jac Caglianone talked about his first four-hit game on Sunday.

“It felt really good,” said Caglianone, who raised his batting average from .095 to .240. “It was a huge thanks to all the guys out here in the locker room. They were very supportive through it all, hitting balls hard and not really much to show for it. Thankfully they found some grass today.”

Matt Quatraro defended Maikel Garcia’s bunt attempt on Friday.

“It’s a 2-2 game and we are having trouble getting something going,” Quatraro said.

“Maikel is a good bunter and we get an opportunity to get Vinnie and Salvy at the plate with second and third with less than two outs. We are going to take that opportunity.”

He also commented on the new lineup.

“We need balance and we need production up and down,” Quatraro said. “It’s nice when you get it from the middle of the order. You know, the two home runs got us the lead. We need to be able to extend the lead as the middle innings go on.”

The Royals lost an opportunity to win a series in Chicago.

“The frustration comes in the fact that we lost,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said.

“Doesn’t matter what the score is. We need to find a way to cash in a couple of those opportunities, because we gave ourselves a couple of good ones but we didn’t come through.”

Jac Caglianone talks to Jaylon Thompson about his first week in the big leagues.

Caglianone is not looking over-matched at the plate, either, and that bodes well for the Royals.

“I can’t wait to see what that guy does in the big leagues,” team captain Salvador Perez said. “He’s one of the best and a big dude, too. I think he is going to do well.”

Jackson Stone writes how the Royals are still plagued by issues of hitting with runners in scoring position.

“Within one game, and I know it’s been the whole season, but within a one-game sample of an 0-for-5 or 0-for-6 [with runners in scoring position], it’s like, you get two hits, and all of a sudden that average boosts a lot,” said Vinnie Pasquantino, who went 3-for-3 with a solo homer and a walk. “And then it’s not even really a conversation.

“I think I’d probably frame it as, yeah, the number was [0-for-5], and that sucks. We got to be better. But where I think we can be better is let’s get more guys into scoring position.”

Salvy is being more selective.

How was Perez better Sunday than he was Saturday? For starters, he showed less chase at the plate.

“Today was a new day, you know, and I got a pitch,” Perez said. “Even yesterday, I missed some pitches right in the middle. So I’m working with my hitting coaches and working with (Royals coach) Miguel Garcia to try to figure out what I’m doing and what’s wrong. I got some pitches to hit today and put a pretty good swing.”

Pete Grathoff writes about the importance of RBI.

I asked Picollo if Caglianone’s presence could benefit others in the Royals lineup, and the Royals general manager talked about the most important statistic to him. It’s an old-school stat that’s not often discussed in this era of advanced metrics.

“I think it helps the whole team,” Picollo said of Caglianone’s presence.

“I mean, it’s an opportunity for RBIs, those guys getting on base. You know, this game is about RBIs. We like to talk about hard-hit (rate) and chase and swing and miss, and that’s all a factor, but the game’s about how many runs you score. “That’s ultimately what allows you to win or lose. So the more RBI opportunities we have with the right guys up, the better chance we have to score more runs.”

Lucas Erceg had a terrific rehab outing.
