Mechanicville baseball headed to first final four in program history
TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Mechanicville baseball team continues to rack up "firsts." One week after securing the program's first-ever sectional championship, the Red Raiders are now going to the state semifinals for the first time in program history after defeating Section 10's Canton, 7-0, in Sunday's New York State Class B regional final.
Chris Couser guided Mechanicville to the victory, throwing a complete game shutout.
Offensively, the third inning proved to be the decisive one for the Red Raiders. With the game still scoreless heading into the inning, Mechanicville quickly changed that, posting six runs in the frame.
The scoring started with a Scotty Lynch double to center field that plated a pair of runs. Mark Pingelski later drove in two Red Raiders with a single to right, pushing Mechanicville's lead to 4-0. The inning was capped by another two-run single from Jake Fedorowicz.
The Red Raiders added to their lead again in the fifth. Chris Couser helped his own cause with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Fedorowicz from third base.
Couser was brilliant on the mound all day, throwing the full seven innings, allowing just three hits and three walks, while striking out four.
With the win, Mechanicville advances to the state semifinals on Friday, and will await Section 11's Babylon. That game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. at Mirabito Stadium in Binghamton.
