Bats erupt for the Barons and Ballers as the affiliates go 2-2 on the night

Lehigh Valley IronPigs 11, Charlotte Knights 4 (Statcast box)
Lehigh Valley wasted no time in getting to starter Tyler Schweitzer. The IronPigs tagged Schweitzer for two runs in the top of the first inning and then hammered him for six more in the second, putting the Knights in a deep hole early on. The 24-year-old southpaw started off the season well with the Birmingham Barons, surrendering no runs over 10 frames. While he had seemingly found his footing in his previous start with Charlotte, tossing six scoreless innings for a quality start, unfortunately this contest proved to be a bit more challenging.

Despite the lopsided score, struggling shortstop Colson Montgomery provided most of the offensive fireworks for Charlotte. Breaking out of an 0-for-14 slump over his last five games, Montgomery mashed two dingers. His first blast was a towering solo shot to center field in the bottom of the first, traveling 435 feet and cutting the deficit in half. He wasn’t done there, as he launched a two-run tank to right in the bottom of the fifth, responsible for three of the four Knights’ runs on the night.

Birmingham Barons 6, Rocket City Trash Pandas 0
The Birmingham Barons secured a 6-0 victory over the Rocket City Trash Pandas, showcasing their ability to manufacture runs. In the bottom of the first, the Barons opened the scoring as Jason Matthews grounded into a force out, bringing home Rikuu Nishida. An errant throw by Rocket City’s second baseman then allowed William Bergolla to score an unearned run, giving Birmingham an early 2-0 advantage. The Barons continued to capitalize on opportunities in the fourth, plating three more runs on just one hit, thanks to a combination of three walks, a fielding error, a hit by pitch, a stolen base, and a wild pitch. Caden Connor later scored on a balk in the seventh, adding another run for good measure.

Despite their success in pushing runs across the plate without a barrage of hits, the Barons did struggle to convert their base knocks into runs, finishing 3-for-16 with runners in scoring position and leaving 11 men on base. Nonetheless, the Barons six tallies proved to be more than enough for starter Tommy Vail, who delivered a strong performance to earn the win. Vail tossed five innings, surrendering only three hits and two walks while striking out eight.

Asheville Tourists 2, Winston-Salem Dash 0
The Winston-Salem Dash fell to the Asheville Tourists in a 2-0 shutout, with the Tourists’ pitching stifling the Dash offense all night. Asheville broke the scoreless tie in the third inning when starter Jake Bockenstedt issued a bases-loaded walk, allowing the Tourists to take a 1-0 lead. They extended their advantage in the sixth, plating another run off reliever Nick Altermatt, which proved to be more than enough. The Dash bats struggled to generate any sustained offense, managing only five singles throughout the game and going 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position. Winston-Salem managed to work four free passes in addition to the five hits, but left nine runners stranded on base, unable to capitalize on their limited opportunities.

Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 12, Myrtle Beach Pelicans 1
The Kannapolis Cannon Ballers offense exploded in a dominant 12-1 win over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, with every player in the lineup contributing to their 15-hit onslaught. The scoring barrage began early in the bottom of the second when George Wolkow launched a two-run dinger, putting the Cannon Ballers on the board. They continued to pour it on in the bottom of the third, erupting for a five-run inning driven by five singles, two walks, and two stolen bases. Kannapolis added two more tallies in the seventh and three in the eighth while also racking up an impressive five stolen bases and nine walks in total, keeping constant pressure on the Pelicans’ defense.

The Cannon Ballers’ pitching staff was equally impressive. Starter Grant Umberger tossed five shutout innings and allowed only four hits while striking out nine batters to earn the win. Relievers Jonathan Clark and Carlton Perkins each tossed a frame, surrendering just one hit apiece. The Pelicans’ lone run came in the seventh inning off Liam Paddack, but by then, the game was well out of reach as the Cannon Ballers cruised to victory.

ACL White Sox 5, ACL Brewers 3 (7 innings)
The ACL White Sox defeated the ACL Brewers in a back-and-forth contest at American Family Fields of Phoenix. The White Sox opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI single from Stiven Flores. Sox starter Mathias LaCombe held the Brewers hitless and scoreless through three, but they battled back, tying the game in the fourth inning off Gray Thomas and then took a brief 2-1 lead in the sixth. However, the White Sox broke the game open in the seventh inning, with Angelo Hernández scoring on a sacrifice fly, followed by Albertson Asigen’s two-run triple and a wild pitch, giving them a 5-2 advantage. The Brewers managed to pull one run back in the bottom of the seventh off Jake Curtis but ultimately fell short.
