Wimberley, Thrall advance to UIL baseball state title games at Dell Diamond

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Wimberley baseball advanced to its first state championship game in program history with a 2-0 sweep of Bridge City in the Class 4A Division II semifinals Friday.

Bryson Anderson scored the winning run for the Texans after a Bridge City error in extra innings to seal a 7-6 win in Game 2 of the best-of-3 series. Wimberley won the opening game 4-1 Thursday.

The Texans (26-7-1) will play Longview Spring Hill (34-7) for the 4A-DII state title at 9 a.m. June 6 at Dell Diamond in Round Rock. Spring Hill swept Brock 7-6 and 2-0 to advance.

Thrall punched its ticket to the 3A-Division II championship with a 2-1 series win over Orange Grove. The Tigers clinched the series with a 2-1 win Saturday at North East Sports Complex in San Antonio. Thrall won the opening game 4-1, but the Bulldogs evened the series with a 7-1 win in Game 2.

Thrall (31-6-1) will face Wall (30-6) at 4 p.m. June 5 at Dell Diamond for the state championship. Wall beat Boyd 2-1 in their semifinal series.

Lake Travis fell 2-1 to Atascocita at Blue Bell Park in College Station in the Class 6A-DI semifinals. Atascocita won the opener 3-2 before the Cavs evened the series 4-1, but the Eagles earned their first-ever trip to a state title game with a 1-0 win in Game 3.

Dripping Springs lost to Kingwood 2-1 in the 6A-DII semifinals at Riverside Park in Victoria. The Tigers fell 6-5 in nine innings Saturday in Game 3. Kingwood won the opener 8-5, and Dripping Springs claimed Game 2 3-0.

Liberty Hill lost a 5A-DII series 2-1 to Humble Kingwood Park at Constellation Field in Sugar Land. The Panthers won the opener 3-2 but dropped the next two games 6-0 and 5-4.

Following the state championship games, the Austin Area Baseball Coaches All-Star Game will take the field at noon on June 8.
