Holmes, Long Ball Leads Mets Past Rockies For Series Sweep
The New York Mets delivered exactly what was anticipated, closing out the series at Citi Field with a 5-3 win and completing a weekend sweep over the league-worst Colorado Rockies. Key contributions from both the pitching staff and the Mets’ top sluggers fueled the victory in Sunday’s finale in Queens.
Clay Holmes was excellent on the mound, continuing a stellar campaign by throwing seven innings and allowing just three hits and three runs, while striking out three to notch his sixth win of the season. His season ERA now stands at 3.07. The three runs he allowed came via two home runs; a solo shot by Orlando Arcia and a two-run blast from Tyler Freeman.

Reed Garrett and Edwin Díaz combined to shut the door, holding Colorado scoreless the rest of the way and combining for five strikeouts. Garrett secured his 13th hold, and Díaz picked up his 13th save of the season.
New York’s offense wasted no time, as Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso, and Juan Soto each homered. Alonso’s three-run opposite field blast in the fourth gave the Mets their first lead. After the Rockies briefly tied it, Lindor answered right back in the bottom of the fifth with another weekend homer, putting New York up 4-3.
That home run marked the 261st of Lindor’s career, moving him past Derek Jeter on the all-time list for shortstops and making him the all-time home run leader among New York shortstops. Soto later added his 10th homer of the year, providing a huge insurance run.
With the sweep, the Mets regained the National League East as the Philadelphia Phillies were swept, at home, by the Milwaukee Brewers. Meanwhile, Colorado’s struggles continued, going 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and stranding two on base.
Player of the Game: Pete Alonso
Pete Alonso came through in a big way, going 1-for-4 with that one being his opposite field three-run home run, his 12th of the season, in the bottom of the fourth inning to kick start the Mets’ offense for the afternoon. This brings Alonso’s batting average up to .288 on the season with an OPS of .927
