A Beatdown In Beantown

0 2

The score of Game 1 in Boston is a bit deceiving. The Baltimore Orioles did in fact lose to the Boston Red Sox 19-5. The game was over for all intents and purposes when Cionel Perez (1.0 IP, 5 R, 4 H (HR), 2 BB) left the game with a score of 11-3 in favor of the Red Sox in the eighth inning.

The final score was the result of position players pitching for both teams; position players gave up a combined ten runs. Emmanuel Rivera “relieved” Perez and despite varying pitch speeds from 43.9 to 85.6 mph, allowed 8 runs on 8 hits, including a grand slam to Rafael Devers, and walked 2 in 1.0 inning. Rivera is sporting a .262 batting acerage and a 72.00 ERA.

Boston elected to use Abraham Toro as their “relief pitcher” in the ninth. Toro, who probably didn’t even reach batting practice speed, allowed 2 runs on 4 hits with a walk in 1.0 inning.

Devers was the Game 1 Orioles killer, going 4 for 6 with a 3-run homerun, a grand slam homerun and 8 RBI.

Ironically enough, the Orioles had a 2-1 lead after 5.5 innings. Seranthony Dominguez (0.1 IP, 3 R, 2 H, BB) and Gregory Soto (0.2 IP, 2 R, 2 H (HR), K, WP) saw the game start to go south in the sixth inning before Boston capitalized on Cionel Perez (1.0 IP, 5 R, 4 H (HR), 2 BB). Dominguez (2-1) took the loss.

Lost in all of this was Cade Povich‘s start. The young southpaw allowed 1 run on 4 hits with 3 walks and 6 strikeouts over 5.0 innings. A high pitch count (98 total, 58 strikes) forced his early exit.

The Orioles third inning rally came on 3 consecutive lead-off singles and a ground out. Jackson Holliday (2 for 5, R, 2 RBI) getting caught trying to steal third with one out helped slow down the rally.

Ryan O’Hearn went 3 for 5 but struggled at times with the Green Monster while playing leftfield.

Gunnar Henderson went 2 for 4 with a double, a walk and a stolen base.

Jorge Mateo went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored.

Ramon Urias went 2 for 5 with 1 RBI.

Every starter with the exception of Cedric Mullins (0 for 5) logged at least 1 hit.
