Mets Offense Lays Another Egg in 2-0 Loss

After dropping game one on Monday night to the Red Sox, the Mets hoped to claim a win and turn things around offensively. However, the Mets suffered yet another shutout—their third shutout of the season—in a 2-0 loss to the Red Sox at Fenway. The Mets also have their first three-game losing streak of the season.

Clay Holmes got his job done, giving up just two earned runs on four hits and three walks over six innings pitched. He struck out five on 90 pitches (53 for strikes). Holmes struggled in the fifth, giving up back-to-back home runs to Carlos Narvaez and Rafael Devers to put the Red Sox on top 2-0. But outside of those two hits, he worked his way out of runners on the basepaths the rest of his outing.

However, Holmes had no offensive support, as the Mets once again could not produce with runners in scoring position. They left two runners on in the second, two runners on in the third, one runner on in the fourth, two runners on in the fifth, and one on in the sixth, and they were 0-f0r-7 with runners in scoring position.

And not only did the Mets get shut out and claim just four hits, but they did so primarily against the Red Sox’s bullpen as Walker Buehler was ejected in the third inning, forcing the Red Sox to have to turn to a bullpen game. They used seven different pitchers, who combined to four-hit the Mets and hold them scoreless.

At the plate, only Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, Mark Vientos, and Tyrone Taylor had hits on Tuesday night as the Red Sox went on to defeat the Mets 2-0.

Brennan Bernardino (3-1) claimed the win for the Red Sox; Holmes (5-3) suffered an unfortunate loss after an overall strong outing, and Aroldis Chapman (8) earned the save.

The Mets have scored just eight runs in the last six games. Steve Cohen offered his thoughts after the frustrating loss.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Tuesday’s player of the game is Clay Holmes: 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K

STAT OF THE GAME

Prior to Tuesday, the Mets were the only team that had not had a three-game losing streak this season. After their loss Tuesday, all teams in the league have now had at least a three-game losing streak this season.

ON DECK

The Mets and Red Sox close out their series on Wednesday night. The Mets will have Tylor Megill (3-4, 3.74 ERA) on the mound against Garrett Crochet (4-3, 2.00 ERA) for the Red Sox.

The Mets will be looking to quickly turn things around and get out of their offensive slump.
