The Mariners try to stop the skid

The Mariners are on a rough stretch of road and it doesn’t project to get any better tonight, as the Yankees will throw their ace Max Fried, currently MLB’s ERA leader, against an offense that’s scuffled to score runs over the past week. The Mariners will counter with Bryan Woo, their de facto ace.

Lineups:

Jorge Polanco takes a seat with a lefty on the mound. Mitch Garver gets a start at DH. Lefty-killer Dylan Moore, surprisingly, bats sixth, while lefty J.P. Crawford bats leadoff.

News:

  • It’s just a regular day off for Jorge Polanco, says Dan Wilson—nothing lingering on that right side.
  • George Kirby and Logan Gilbert both threw bullpens today. Gilbert was throwing 90% intensity, per Shannon Drayer, although it looked like a little less than that from my vantage point—maybe just from being so accustomed to seeing Gilbert throwing max effort. Kirby’s pen was very sharp, location and stuff-wise, eliciting many oohs and ahhs from the gathered starters.
  • Leo Rivas might be the team’s new emergency catcher, as he caught a “bullpen” from pitching coach Pete Woodworth. Meanwhile, Mitch Garver might take Rivas’s spot as designated position player pitcher, as he was throwing some pitches to one of the bullpen catchers. No food, no jobs, pets’ heads falling off, things of that nature.

Captain’s Log:

Wilson on Julio Rodríguez’s recent tear:

“He has really swung the bat well. I think when you look at what he’s done over the past several games—has not struck out very much at all, has found a lot of barrels, drove the ball out of the ballpark last night—so when you see him as he has been, driving the ball to right field and also being able to pull the ball, that’s when you know he’s in a really good spot. We’ve seen that from him and he continues to have outstanding at-bats.”
