Mets Sweep Double-A Weekly Awards
It was a big week on the field for a couple of players in the Mets’ farm system, and that play has resulted in some hardware off of it. Jonah Tong and Ryan Clifford of the Double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies won the Eastern League weekly awards for pitcher and hitter for their performance these past seven days.
Tong threw 6.2 perfect innings, striking out 13 in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday night. Only his pitch count of 99 stopped him from finishing the game. His teammate, TJ Shook, entered to retire the final hitter and finish the perfecto for Binghamton.
The Mets’ sixth-ranked prospect, according to MLB, continued what has been a strong 2025 so far. The 22-year-old nowhas a 2.57 ERA over his first six starts, with an impressive 16.4 K/9. Tong’s start against the Phillies’ Double-A affiliate was also his first outing of the year, where he recorded an out in the sixth inning or later.
Clifford meanwhile slashed .474/.500/1.000 this past week, hitting three home runs while driving in nine runs. The Mets’ fourth-ranked prospect had a big week in a season of incremental growth for the 21-year-old. So far in 2025, Clifford is hitting 17 points higher for average than he was in Double-A a season ago, with a .248 batting compared to .231 in 2024.
Many Mets fans have seen Clifford as a possible successor at first base if Pete Alonso signs elsewhere in free agency. Well, with Alonso’s stellar performance so far in 2025, any “replacement” talks have subdued. But, in what has been a season of many “good problems to have,” Clifford continuing to mash and move up in the system could be an additional one.
Matt Allan Among Players Receiving Minor-League Promotions
The Mets made a handful of promotions as well Monday, notably, upping Matt Allan from St. Lucie to Brooklyn. The 24-year-old pitching prospect, who first made waves as a third-round pick in 2019, had been injury-riddled since then, has made seven appearances this season. In those starts, Allan pitched 15 innings, allowing 11 hits, six runs, four walks and 11 strikeouts.
Joining Allan in the trip north from Low-A will be RHP Raimon Gomez and RHP Nate Dohm.
In addition, RHP Dylan Ross and RHP Anthony Nunez are graduating from Single-A to Double-A Binghamton.
