Seth Lugo didn’t have much offense to support him Sunday for his Quality Start, writes Anne Rogers.
The offense has been dissected over and over again to begin the year, and the Royals have emphasized their confidence in the lineup they have. That doesn’t go away after a three-game set like this one against a good Red Sox pitching staff.
“Those guys pitched their butts off,” manager Matt Quatraro said. “There are two teams out there trying to execute. Their pitchers did a heck of a job. … You look at all three days, it was a different look. They have a really well-balanced bullpen, righties and lefties. Guys that have done this for a long time. They know how to pitch.”
Blair Kerkoff also writes about the struggling offense.
“We did everything we could to get the runs in,” Waters said. “We’ll look to do a better job tomorrow. ...
“Anytime you can put a run up early, you start to feel the momentum shift in your direction. But Boston has the ability to kind of kill the momentum.”
Cole Ragans is looking to go deeper into games.
Five innings seem to be the sweet spot for the lefty, who has wanted to pitch deeper into games in 2025. His elite stuff allows him to rack up the strikeouts — he added eight more to his total on Saturday — but he wants to be more efficient with it.
“Lately, I haven’t been doing a good job of that,” Ragans said. “Today, I felt like if I had a little bit quicker of a fifth, I could have gone back out for the sixth. I just had a long fifth. It’s more so minimizing the big innings. I didn’t do that tonight.”
