Soto Goes Deep Twice as Mets Take Series From Diamondbacks
After the Mets dropped game two to the Diamondbacks Tuesday night, Kodai Senga threw six scoreless innings, Juan Soto homered twice, and Francisco Lindor doubled twice, driving in a pair of runs to lead New York to a 7-1 victory in the rubber match Wednesday.
It was a pitchers’ duel through five innings in Phoenix before the Mets drew first blood with a solo home run in the sixth by Soto off of Merrill Kelly (3-2, 4.09 ERA) to give the Mets a 1-0 lead over the Diamondbacks. The 427-foot shot was Soto’s sixth home run of the season and was hit at 110.9 miles per hour.
The Mets tacked on a couple more runs in the seventh. An RBI single by Luisangel Acuña scored Luis Torrens, who doubled earlier in the inning. Jeff McNeil followed with his second triple of the season, which scored Acuña to make it a 3-0 game and knocked Kelly out of the game.
Soto then led off the eighth inning with his second home run of the game, an opposite-field shot to left field to extend the Mets’ lead to 4-0. This was Soto’s second multi-homer game against the Diamondbacks in the last 10 days.
Kodai Senga (4-2, 1.16 ERA) battled through the first three innings of the game and worked around some trouble, walking five of the first 10 batters he faced. However, he settled down and found his groove in the fourth and finished by retiring 11 of the last 12 batters he faced.. He held the Diamondbacks to just two hits and struck out four.
Max Kranick took over for Senga in the seventh and dealt with traffic on the basepaths. He worked his way around back-to-back singles in the seventh, but he gave up a scoreless game in the eighth when Corbin Carroll homered to center field to get a run back for the Diamondbacks.
After Kranick gave up hits to four of the last six batters he faced, the Mets brought in Huascar Brazobán to finish the eighth for Kranick.
The Mets scored three more in the ninth. With two on, Lindor hit his second double of the afternoon to bring home both runners. Lindor then stole third and Soto drove him in on a sacrifice fly to left field to make it a 7-1 Mets lead.
Ryne Stanek came in to close out the ninth for the Mets as they went on to win 7-1 to head into the off-day and back to Citi Field with a 2-1 series victory over Arizona.
