The two teams everyone confuses for each other match up for a three-game set

After a wildly successful road trip, the Mariners return home for a short, five-game, two-series homestand before heading back out on the road. This is their last* homestand until the end of May (*I am not counting the Toronto series, because we all know those don’t really count as “home” games, and it’s followed directly by a series against the Yankees, which I’m also not counting), so if you want to see the Mariners in a non-invasive environment, you’ll want to get to the ballpark this series or the next.

Today’s Lineups:

Well, it had to happen sometime, but that doesn’t make it easier to take Randy Arozarena out of this lineup when he has so often been the engine powering it. It’s just a scheduled off-day for Arozarena—recall that it needs to come when a righty is on the mound so Luke Raley and Miles Mastrobuoni can both be in the lineup—so look for him back in the lineup tomorrow. The Mariners will also endeavor to get Cal Raleigh an off-day sometime during this quick homestand.

And here’s the Marlins lineup. You might remember Cal Quantrill from when he was a Padres prospect, their first-rounder back in 2016. Between him being a former Padres pitching prospect and a former first-rounder, don’t be surprised if Jerry Dipoto descends from his suite with a net and scoops him right out of the third base dugout before this series is over.

As for the other humans in this lineup, if it reads like this to you, you are not alone:

Liam Hicks? Knock it off. Get serious.

Luckily, for those of us who don’t pay much attention to the NL or the NL East or the non-Philly/Mets/Atlanta part of the NL East, Jake has this handy overview for you.

News:

The start of a homestand means copious injury updates from GM Justin Hollander; read about them all here.

Captain’s Log:

Dan Wilson on his team’s successful road trip, including a few low-probability wins:

“Words like ‘resiliency’ and ‘fight,’ those things continue to ring true. We had a lot of back-and-forth games, a lot of close games, and these guys found a way to win. And that’s everything...You know, we lost the first game of every series, but were able to regroup and not get panicked by that at all and just go out the next night and do what we had to do. So those are all really good signs. I think guys are really committed to staying in the moment and coming out the next day ready to go.”

Today’s Game Information:

Game time: 6:40 PT

TV: ROOT Sports NW, with Aaron Goldsmith and Ryan Rowland-Smith

Radio: 710 AM Seattle Sports, with Gary Hill Jr. and Angie Mentink

If you’re coming to the park, remember tonight is Captain’s Hat night; tomorrow night is Moose Shoulder Plush night.

After the weekend series finishes up, the Mariners will have an off-day on Monday, and then a short two-game set against the Angels before heading back out on another road trip. The Angels series games will be Value Games, with seats as low as ten dollars.

Today in Mariners History:

  • 1981 - Hoping to give his pitchers an edge, Maury Wills gets the Kingdome’s grounds crew to enlarge the batter’s box, making it a foot closer to the mound. Prior to the game, A’s skipper Billy Martin shares his suspicions with the umpire Bill Kunkel, and the exposed Mariners manager is suspended for two games.
  • 1997 - In a 13-8 victory at Toronto, Ken Griffey Jr. belts three home runs in a game for just the second time in his career. He has 13 homers in April, a new Major League record. He hits career home run #250, making him the fourth-youngest player to reach the milestone.
  • 2001 - Kazuhiro Sasaki records his 11th save in April, tying the Mariners record for the most saves in ANY month.
  • 2016 - Kyle Seager hit his 100th career home run in the fourth inning against the Astros at Safeco Field. He became the first player drafted and developed by the Mariners to hit his first 100 home runs with the club since 1998 (Alex Rodriguez), as well as the seventh player to hit his first 100 career home runs with the Mariners.
