A Sweep Averted

0 3

The Baltimore Orioles avoided a three game series sweep by the Washington Nationals with a 2-1 victory Thursday night. Despite recording fout hits and 2 walks, the Orioles strung together three of those hits to score twice in the fifth inning. On the downside, the Birds left five men on base and went 2 for 8 with runners in scoring position.

Ramon Laureano (1 for 4, 2B, R) doubled with one out in the fifth and scored on a Ryan O’Hearn (1 for 3, R, RBI) single; O’Hearn advanced to second on the play. Cedric Mullins (1 for 4, RBI, SB) hit a two out single, allowing O’Hearn to score.

Jordan Westburg went 1 for 4.

Jackson Holliday was hit by a pitch and stole a base.

A solid performance by Cade Povich (1-2) made the modest offensive output stick. Povich allowed 1 run on 4 hits with a walk, 5 strikeouts and a wild pitch thrown over 6.2 innings to secure the win. He tossed 87 pitches, 60 for strikes, in the effort.

Povich matched Washington’s starter MacKenzie Gore (2-2) who allowed 2 runs on 4 hits with a walk and 8 strikeouts over 6.0 innings (99 pitches, 66 strikes).

Yennier Cano (0.1 IP) and Gregory Soto (1.0 IP) held the game until Felix Bautista (1.0 IP, H, K) could record his third save of the season.
