The day off did nothing to distance the Baltimore Orioles from their Easter Sunday debacle. Tuesday night’s contest in the Nation’s Capital ended in a 7-0 shutout at the hands of the Washington Nationals. Sadly, all of the Orioles warts were on display. Starting pitching could not make it through six innings, ten extra base hits, including two homeruns, were allowed, a run scored on a wild pitch, outfielders misplayed some balls, second base wasn’t covered in he infield and the bats produced just one hit. This was not winning baseball.
It’s hard enough to watch the game but to hear on-air comments like this is just an “abberation” and “it is still early, it’s April” makes one wonder what the MASN people are watching. The most worrisome comment came from former Oriole Brian Roberts who predicted the pitching rotation would look much different in six weeks. If the team plays the majority of those six weeks (presumably when our injured pitchers return) like they have the last two days, they will be out of the playoff picture by Memorial Day.
Dean Kremer (2-3) started and took the loss by allowing 6 runs, 5 earned, on 11 hits (2 HR) while striking out 4 and throwing a wild pitch over 5.1 innings. He threw 101 pitches, 67 for strikes, in doing so.
Cedric Mullins was the offense, going 1 for 2 with 2 walks.
Adley Rutschman (0 for 3, BB) and Jackson Holliday (0 for 2, BB) did reach base via walks.
The bullpen was respectable. Matt Bowman allowed a run on 2 hits with 2 strikeouts over 1.2 innings of relief and Keegan Akin gave up a hit and struck out 1 in the ninth.
