The Mariners wrap up a long road trip with a series at Boston

From the weird start times to the idiosyncrasies of Fenway Park to the fact that the Mariners seem to always melt down spectacularly there, the annual trip to visit the Red Sox is one I personally dread. Thankfully, the Mariners have built up a decent clutch of wins over this long road trip, so even if they drop the series—or, gross, get swept—the worst they can do on this trip is 4-5, which feels acceptable for a long road trip covering two time zones, three cities, and two countries.

That 4-5 record looks pretty plausible, as FanGraphs doesn’t like the Mariners much in this series, giving them no higher than 46% odds to win any of these three games—and that puts a heavy burden on Bryce Miller, who has the best odds of the three back-end Mariners starters against the starters Boston is going to throw this series, in order to avoid the sweep.

Today’s Lineups:

Julio returns to the top of the lineup, and Jorge Polanco is also back in the lineup. Miles Mastrobuoni gets the start over Ben Williamson at third.

For the Red Sox, Brayan Bello makes his first start of the season after dealing with a minor shoulder injury this spring. The Mariners have seen Bello four times since 2023 and never had much success against him; in all but one start, he’s struck out seven, and has limited the Mariners to two runs or fewer in three of those four starts, earning three wins.

Today in Mariners History:

  • 1977 - The Mariners turn their first triple play in franchise history against the Kansas City Royals at the Kingdome. Darrell Porter grounded to SS Craig Reynolds who stepped on second to force Amos Otis, and threw to 1B Danny Meyer to double Porter. Meyer than relayed to C Skip Jutze who tagged John Mayberry, trying to score from third (6-3-2).
  • 1993- Chris Bosio hurls the second no-hitter in Mariners history, beating the Boston Red Sox 7-0 in the Kingdome. Bosio walked the first two batters, then tossed a double play ball to start a string of 26 straight batters retired.
  • 2013 - Félix Hernández recorded his 100th career victory in the Mariners 7-1 win at Houston. Felix became the 6th-youngest pitcher to record his 100th victory among players who began their career since divisional play began in 1969. Only five reached 100 wins at a younger age than Hernandez (27 years, 14 days old): Dwight Gooden (24 years, 215 days), Bert Blyleven (25 years, 76 days), Fernando Valenzuela (26 years, 162 days), Don Gullett (26 years, 199 days) and Vida Blue (26 years, 361 days). Sounds like a bunch of Hall of Famers to me.
